'avinabacca' I live in the real world and im saying that the governemnt like to help drug addicts so the only way to get any where it seems is to tell a few lies.
I'm not a bad person I just want a better life - like everyone else.

we all want a better life - maybe its a case of budgeting and working hard for what you want - the same as the rest of us. We all have to make the best of what we have got in this day and age.

I dont understand why everyone is annoyed with my question?? I haven't come here to annoy people, why is everyone so mad???
I'm just wondering what I need to do in order to get a council house. Im not saying I like to rob old people or steal cars!!! calm down!!!!!!

The problem with your posts is that you don't want to be preached about moarals to, but you're happy to do that to everyone else.

In an ideal world people would be able to get council homes easier and there wuld be enough to go around. Mortgages would be easier to obtain and pay and there would be no unscrupulous landlords. We don't live in an ideal world.
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!

You mean you're only after getting hold of a council house by fraudulent means, and preventing someone who genuinely* deserves one from having somewhere to live?

Oh, my mistake - that's quite alright, then! :(

*By which I mean seriously in trouble - there're plenty who'd bite your arm off for £21k per year and a steady house tenancy, even at £650 a month.
Oh come on, don't be silly.

    It's the internet
    - it's not real!

Have you contacted your local housing associations first to find out what their system is re need etc. I think thats what you need to do straight away, get the Yellow Pages, ring the council and then all the housing associations. You may just be fortunate when a house has been vacated. You wont know unless you get started now. If you need any help the CAB locally may be able to assist.

Hi 'totally broke' yeah when my boyfriend's, brother's pipe leaked above their kitchen, the council sorted it and paid for all the repairs. If you own your own home you would have to pay for it all yourself.

Well actually it is people like me that have to pay for it. I bought an ex council home and every year I get a breakdown of all the repairs the council have made to the properties in the block and I have to pay a % of the cost. I already pay £95per month to them and this year they have told me I owe an extra £200 because they had to fix things. The bloody annoying thing is that they won't fix anything for me.
It's not fair because his brother and girlfriend between them earn £55k per year so they could easily afford a mortgage or to rent privately.

Yes they could afford to rent or buy. But at the time they got the council property they would've had to worked their way up a list or as is now the case be awarded points dependant on their need of the property.
But you have to also remember that TWO wrongs DO NOT make a right. Just because they have done it does not give you automatic right to do the same.
My friend's nan lives alone in a 3 bedroomed council house. They occassionally write to her asking if she would consider moving to a 1 bed place and she refuses. Sorry! but they should TELL her not ASK her. I think as long as they give her sufficient notice and find her another property then that sounds very fair to me.
AND YES THIS IS A GENUINE POST! I didn't realise it would get peoples backs up???? that's not my intention.

When she dies they will bloody well get the house back then. Why should they tell her to move? She has memories and friends there. It's been her home for years.

You may not have wanted to get anyones back up but my hackles are rising. If you want something in life then bloody go out there and legitimately work and subsiquently earn it. Why should the likes of me work bloody hard to keep my family as well as contribute to keeping yours by paying for your repairs?

    This is not a click..

At this moment in time people are worried about losing their homes, jobs etc through the credit crunch. Things we have worked bloody hard to achieve and it could all be gone.
You are right none of us are perfect but some of us have not posted in a manner that suggests she wants the world in her lap for doing nothing and that the world owes her a favour because she only has £50 a month to live on and she has to pay rent.

I really think the council need to review their tenents every few years and keep the houses for people in more need.

And yet you want a council house for security of tenure? Only first they should throw everyone else out of their council houses? ;)

Grimbo, I agree it is unfair that council homes are out of reach for most people. Unless you're a single mother or an asylum seeker, you're unlikely to get a home given to you. Even if you do, they're usually not very nice from what I have seen anyway.

In South Bucks and Slough (I think) the waiting list is about 9 years I think, and goes by how many points you have. Unless you are made involuntarily homeless you are unlikely to be given anything ever. If you are a married couple with children who seem to be getting on OK without help, then they won't help you.

I think it is just a fact that Britains welfare system is flawed and is unlikely to change, but at the same time I appreciate there are many people much worse off than me (or you) and they DO deserve what is available, some people screw the system so they can get it unfairly though...
  • Grimbo Green i totally see your point, i was in a similar situation once a long time ago and was actually offered a council maisonette, which was great because it was so cheap. The problem i was actually scared to go out in the daytime never mind the night time, i couldnt get away fast enough, my husbands job took us around 50 miles away so we applied for a house transfer, over the phone i was told no chance so we gave up our council place and went back private at £565 pcm 11 years ago alot of money for renting. Within a few days of moving into new house i had a redirected letter offering us a council house about two miles away from our new rented house, when i rang up the department who had told me no chance he said we have done you a favour love stay where you are. Soon after we bought a lovely house nearby and the rest is history.

I am not a snob and there are some nice council/housing association areas but they are not the only option.
Our way out of high rents was cut back on living expenses as much as possible work hard, i worked when hubby got home we passed like ships in the night. It really hard i was soooo tired and felt down alot of the time but we came through it.

I agree about the single people being left in their properties (its not just old people) i know a man who has a council house who is claiming everything he can and working as well he lives alone. He doesnt need the space (3 bedrooms) but this wont change in the near future. There is not enough affordable housing.

You sound like you are on the right track already, could you increase your hours when back off maternity leave i think you would get help with childcare as you dont have a huge income.

The council are supposed to repair and maintain their houses, my step sister has a council house and they are terrible when it comes to maintaining it. The stairs have holes in them the doors are hanging off, it was like this when she moved in and she was told she accepted it so she must put it right. I think different councils can be better than others.
