Can anyone recommend good books for this age group, or know any sites that will tell me the latest prize winners? I've been given £25 for this and I'd like to spend it wisely.

check your local library to test books out then buy the ones they like. the book people & redhouse are cheap when buying new. my son loved books with flaps at that age - got bored if he couldn't join in.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0

Really an echo of the post above! My son is two and loves being read to. We have bought lots from both https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk and redhouse books (there is a link to them from the book people site). Redhouse is good for discounted best sellers, book people do some brilliant picture book collections at £10 for 10 which we have had a lot of use out of. I find that he likes certain books best because of the interactive way his Dad reads them rather than because they are on someone elses recommended list. It does need to be story books now though - anything else is rejected. The librray books will give you an idea of the kind of book he will get most pleasure out of.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0

Tonight (and for the past week  ) we have been reading (10 times every night  ) Hairy Maclairy from Donaldsons Dairy by Lynley Dodd.
My daughter is two in January, she loves the books with photographs in, no story, just lots of things to point at and talk about.
Her all time favourite book is What Do You Say? by Mandy Stanley. It's a very simple book but allows the reader to do wacky animal noises and actions, which generally goes down VERY wellJust run, run and keep on running!0 -
Look at Redhouse.co.uk They are a sister company to bookpeople but specialise in childrens books. They are incredibly good value and you can search in age groups.
For £25 you can buy the whole Mr men series on the site.
I now buy all my books here

My son's favourite at the moment is a collection of Mog stories - it is a great bedtime story book, has lovely pictures and will grow up with him as the stories are good enough for children that can read - it is hardback too so wont fall to pieces. Ottakers is a good place to browse before buying - there are various Tesco clubcard points offers on kids books too (see this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=92862 ).0

Hi, I'm a childminder and along with Dear Zoo (which I have made into a storysack with props etc) and the Hairy Maclairy books I have found that every child that I have ever cared for has enjoyed -
The Gruffalo -by Julia Donaldson (she has lots of other great books too)
Peepo - Janet and Allan Ahlberg (which I really love because it reminds me of my Grandparents farmhouse from when I was a child)
Usborne Farmyard Tales -Stephen Cartwright (lots of different titles but all about the same family and their animals exploits)
Elmer the elephant books - David McKee
oooh... I could go on and on and on but you've only got £25 and I could spend hundreds and this site is supposed to save you money!!!.I like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -
Many thanks for all the suggestions so far. Unfortunately our local library is very small and most of the books on offer for browsing tend to be the ones that no one wants to borrow. The other problem is that the ds spends all his time around the Thomas videos saying "Wow!" and "Lovely!"
We've found Hairy McClary already thanks but will look up Dear Zoo, The Gruffalo and What Do You Say. He's never really liked the Usbourne Farmyard Tales for some reason.
Many thanks also for tips for sites.
Some of his current favourites are Where the Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Magic Beach, Ten in the Bed, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, The Bear Under the Stairs, The Giraffe Who !!!! a Doodle Dooed, Each Peach Pear Plum, Alfie Gets in First, Millions of Cats and A Dark Dark Tale.
Any further suggestions greatly appreciated.0 -
