I haven't uploaded my avatar to the site - I have uploaded it to my own free image hosting area and then entered the link to my avatar into my Avatar page. Does this mean you can use more space than permitted if you were uploading, or is the image retrieved from the URL and transferred across to the local avatar storage area on this site? :)

    Hi intel,

    No, I didn't use an

    vbulletin doesn't support hotlinking avatars

Putting a web address in just meant that vb fetched the image from the address and copied on to MSE's space. It is not hotlinked

Thats what I thought that it couldnt be linked and I do see what T_G means also, but why the option to link if the file size remains a max of 19.5kb.. makes little sense, or I could do a link to a Avatar from my freespace.

vbulletin only supports having all images hosted on the forum's webspace. The field to put in a web address is just another way of uploading the image onto mse. Not an offer to hotlink

In fact rather than having bigger avatars I was wondering if it would be useful to turn 'Profile Pictures' back on?

When viewing someone's profile you see their avatar on the left. When Profile Pictures was switched on people had a chance to upload a second picture that was displayed on the right (Above 'last activity')

Would many people be brave enough to display a real picture of themselves? I thought not - but people seem to be getting braver in the show-us-a-photo threads in the arms.

    :)

When something is switched off in vbulletin it sometimes just bars access rather than removing anything.

When Profile Pictures were switched off, people who had uploaded them could not remove them or edit them.

Then a short while after that there was an error with the database and all our avatars and images were corrupted. We could change our avatars but not those old pictures - which is why you can still see some of them to this day:

intel - I've checked in the admin area and the max avatar size is currently 20000 bytes. Avatars have quite a drastic effect on forum performance so have to be fairly small give the size of the forum.

Really though, this is a question for Webby, I would suggest emailing webmaster@moneysavingexpert.com if you need further information.
