Try to compress your avatar using PIXresizer. It takes an amazing amount off the size of most graphics and images, even those already compressed with Photoshop or Paintshop.

    Download PIXresizer from here

I got my snowing avatar on but only after reducing the file down to 31 colours - which means the fading background (going from green to red) now appears to have several distinct 'bands' rather the smooth fade of the original.

Just for fun, done the PIXresizer on your avatars:

    gizmoleads: from 13.5 to 5.11 (saved 62%)
    intel: from 16.4 to 3.82 (76%)
    m00nie: from 9 to 2.21 (75%)
    postingalwaysposting: from 8.9 to 1.51 (87%)

Not sure though whether the animated ones are still animated after the compress

I am not really familiar with animated gifs, but just played with gizmoleads' one in Paintshop Animation Shop. By deleting a few frames and changing the frame duration, I've got a 3.95KB version that looks and behaves exactly like the 13.5KB version.

So with a bit of playing about, I think most avatars can easily be accommodated within the current site settings.

Using smaller avatars doesn't just conserve disk space (which isn't so expensive these days) but also - and more importantly - contributes to good performance.

I'd therefore advocate that, if anything, MSE should reduce the max avatar sizes and recommend people use PIXresizer or some other optimiser

The only probelem with downsizing a ani .gif is that it looks rubbish and you could only have a 8 frames maximum and reduced colour.
