mbaz i not surprised to see you are off to a flying start and i agree with the poster that your family are lucky to have you!
i tried a fish pie on Monday -huge success -somebody (apologies can't remember poster) posted a really simple haddock mornay recipe on one of the meal plan threads, which i adapted to suit us
Easy Fish Pie
1/2 pack frozen white fish fillets or pieces (approx £1.68 in asda)
1 pint cheese sauce (butter, cornflour, milk, salt & pepper, cheese)
broccolli (optional)
mash potato
bit of extra cheese for top of pie
basically i cooked the fish in the microwave, cut into bite size pieces, put in the bottom of a dish, cooked broccolli - pulsed some of it and mixed into the cheese sauce (tip be careful as you don't want the sauce to be "bright green"), poured cheese/broccolli sauce over fish, topped with mash and sprinkled the remaining cheese on top of pie and placed under the grill until cheese had melted - it was divine served with remaining broccolli
you can throw anything your family likes into it, handful of peas, sweetcorn, prawns etc
we are a family of three and there was enough with plenty of leftovers
hope that helps, dtx0 -
Just made 3 cottagepie - someone else will have to price this up as i'm not upto date with veg prices.
2 x 500g lamb mince (reduced to 97p each)
2 x large onions
2 x large carrots
2 x handful of chopped red pepper
2 x two handfuls of frozen peas
good handful of red lentils
1 x garlic clove
herbs
550ml of stock (I used lamb)
few glugs of worcestershire sauce
I used about 2kg potatoes and 3 parsnips for the mash
well it made three family sized cottage pies so one for tonight and the other two for the freezer.
Tip - for the first time chopped up some of my red peppers and put them in the freezer. Used them for the first time today and they are fine so maybe a good idea to do this when they are on offer in the shops.Kind Regards

sandraroffey wrote: »jamie olivers 'fantastic fish pie' is the best!! i make it using whatever fish i have to hand but i find that always adding a bit of smoked haddock makes it even better. and lots of veggies in it as well. and never mind spending the change on a big bottle of multi vits - you've more than earned a very large bottle of wine!!!!! do so envy you; that is one hell of a shop and so carefully planned as well. bet you make all your own preserves as well??? thought so!!!!! great stuff.xxxx
Big thankyou to sandraroffy and Hamish222

This thread is so inspiring!!
Has anyone any ideas what I can put in the 2 raised beds that I created in my garden? Had masses of runner beans from 1!
Had a look at the backs of some seed packs yesterday and couldn't find anything that could be sown now to grow over winter.0 -
Apple - suggest you visit the Greenfingers board for gardening advice - there's loads of info there on what to grow over winter.0

Hi Mum of 4, Have you thought about blending some granulated sugar in to Caster sugar? This would save you buying Caster sugar or even icing sugar as they can be sooo expensive to buy. If you need Caster sugar, just blend ordinary Granulated sugar down to caster sugar size and if you need icing sugar, blend it down abit more to the consistency of icing sugar. That would save you quite a bit of money.20p savers club

OMG is that what caster sugar is?:o I had no idea.
Well that is something i will be doing from now on and yes it will save me money. I can't believe that for the last 15 years i've been buying it, gosh what a waste.
Maybe i'm slow but the icing suger seems more powder like so does it work i guess i'll just have to try.
Thanks demented for a great tipKind Regards

Hi Mum of 4. Yes i know what you mean about the waste of money on buying both Caster and icing sugar, when all you really need is either a blender or if you haven't got a blender, a good old fashioned rolling pin plus either a plastic or paper bag, with the rolling pin method, you just put the sugar into the bag and roll it heavily with the rolling pin until you get the consistency that you want. When your making Icing sugar in the blender, just keep your eye on the consistency and try not to get too carried away with "Blending" Although saying that you haven't lost anything, just gained more icing sugar, also it does work just the same as the bought stuff.
Got to say well done on your shopping list.20p savers club
