Hmm, now they're saying that ING is acquiring $3bn in UK deposits in Icelandic banks. Not sure what that means, exactly.

I think it means that The UK is grabbing the cash before the Icelandic Government takes it over as they did with Icesave, sounds jolly good news for KE savers since recent events!

It COULD mean that Ing take over the accounts and we all get unfrozen. The FSCS won't then pay us out, but will be used to guarantee the deposits to ING.

That's what they did when Santander took over B&B

Haha... I transferred my ISAs away from ING to ICesave just a few months ago because of the poor interest rate I was getting! Oh well, if they want it back then they can have it, as long as I get more than 4.5% or whatever it was.

panic over

have to say i'm impressed with the govt's response to this:

freeze Landsbanki's UK assets (a significant sum of money as the own most of our highstreet)
issue unequivocal statement that we will get all our money bank
do all this within 24 hours of icesave going into receivership!

I still feel sorry for those who need the money in the short term or who will suffer from loss of interest. But at the same time I feel elated, both for myself (£6k in savings) and particularly for those who had over £50k...a lot of people's livelihoods and retirement plans have been saved which is fantastic

I'm beginning feel like Zebedee on the Magic Roundabout. A while back we transferred all our savings (apart from £9) from ING to Icesave and now we seem to be back with them again! Does this mean all our Icesave accounts are unfrozen and the compensation claim process is cancelled? Things are moving so quickly that I'm very confused now, although I gather ING are guaranteeing all deposits up to the value of 100,000 Euros.
• I'm not a big fan of the government, but can I suggest you all take a minute to send a thank you to Alistair Darling for saving our butts.

We're quick to scream at him and his colleagues when they do things we disagree with, but in light of the disgraceful behaviour of the Icelandic government in quite openly stating they have no intention of honouring their compensation scheme, we were heading for disaster until Darling stepped in.

His email address is:

darlinga@parliament.uk

I for one, count myself lucky! I've just sent him a thank you.

I think this just referring to the Heritable bank

Under a deal organised by the Treasury, just over 22,000 people with savings in the Heritable bank, also owned by Landsbanki, are also being rescued.
Their accounts, amounting to £538m, are being transferred to the control of the giant Dutch bank ING.

Not sure if they will - unless they do some fancy footwork, I think the scheme covers all interest accrued to the point of insolvency (although we will definately lose a few months interest from now until we get reunited with our cash

Just to say a big THANK YOU to everyone updating us on the situation icon7.gif

Myself and OH both have ISA's with Icesave amounting to £14k and have, like everyone else in similar situations, been extremely worried.

It means a lot to keep up-to-date and it's so good to read that the government will hopefully be returning our money.

MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS
