If you are receiving any unemployment benefits or indeed if you are actually looking for work (i.e. you are not out of employment by choice) then you may very well have bought a worthless policy as it is fairly likely that the policy will be void if the insurer discovers the true circumstances.

You can only select househusband if you are not working by choice and rely on your partner for financial support without claiming any benefits from the state.

  • thanks raskazz, you seem to know your stuff!

thinking about it tho, you mention that your insurance could be worthless if the details are wrong, but if you only have theft cover and a car worth say £300 then that's not much of a big deal is it?

why would people be worrued about the policy being worthless if it's not really of any worth to them anyway - just a piece of paper you have to buy to stay within the law?

A carer! ;) (And may I add what a valuable job that is to society which is done by many an unsung person)

But househusband is fine as long as the benefits you receive are not intended for those actually seeking employment.

It's funny that you mention the compulsory legal nature of insurance as that is the bit that is a major danger to those who have policies that have been obtained through fraud or reckless negligence.

If a person has an accident and damages someone else's property and/or injures them then (to but it in basic terms as the position is quite complicated) the insurer of the car has to compensate the third party, even if the contract is void. Of course the insurer doesn't want to incur a loss on a void policy, so it will sue the policyholder who lied, to recover the amount that they had to pay the innocent party. Bear in mind that serious personal injury claims can easily run into hundreds of thousands of pounds (or even millions for those who are left permanently disabled and in need of care). As you can see, the loss of their own old banger is the least of their worries!

Edited to add: Have a look at your own policy booklet for example - there will probably be a section headed 'Right of Recovery' in the general conditions, this is the bit that spells this kind of thing out!

thanks - some common sense at last

I've also thought of another one - say if i have an accident and would cost £1000 to fix my car, but i stand to lose my NCB. If i'm unemployed i might not have a choice other than to make a claim, but if i'm working i might be able to afford to fix the car myself and save my NCB.

this might contribute to unemployed (and poor) people being higher risk. I assume nobody has any objections to this point?

Forewarning JonBoy that I only earn £12,500 a year (and im working full time) so you probably wont read my response as I dont earn enough for me to be considered knowledgable to you.

Why just because someone is unemployed do they have to be poor? My dad is unemployed and he has a lot of money. My mum still works but only as she say's she would be bored if she didn't. They both have enough money to live comfortably on even if they were both unemployed.

What about lottery winners? A lot of them are going to be unemployed and they'll still have a lot more money than I imagine you ever will.

I've got a mate that has a habit of working for a few years then he goes on a massive trip. Like 5 years ago he went around australia for 6 months. Last year he went round America for abotu 4 months. During that time he was unemployed but once again it doesn't make him poor.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
  • The insurance companys in the UK have found another way to con hundreds of pounds out of the people that need it the most by saying that if you are unemployed you will use your car more, HA, what a joke, they think you can drive on fumes these days.

I now know why so many people drive un-insured.

I have been driving for 18 years, always paid insurance and never had an accident, but my insurance has gone up to SIX HUNDRED POUNDS !!

    I drive an 2001 volvo not a ferrari !!
