car insurance unemployed

I`ve had my insurance come though and its gone up, and was shoppin around to try see if i can get it cheaper.

But i was made redundant last month so for my occcupation do i say im unemployed? or do i say what my occupation usually is? My thoughst are i`m not planning on being unemployed for a whole 12 months...

If i say im unemployed and then i get a job, if i then ring up and tell the insurance company wont they then slap me with a 50quid admin fee or something?

  • cant see it matters if you employed or not to get insurance.

If they discover you fibbed on taking out a policy, they could refuse to settle a claim.

You would be driving without insurance.

Be honest - it probably won't affect the premium anyway.

to by knowledge, i dont think that being unempolyed causes problems with insrance,

employment is usually asked to establish if you are in a high risk category (ie sports person, actor, etc, often due to compensation involved in pi claims, ie a footballer involved in a car accident could have £100ks in loss earning claims etc if personal injury is involved etc) and what type of people that would likely to be in a car with you etc, that could also sustain injury etc

it is also used to establish the usage of the vehicle ie if you are a labourer, carpenter etc and if veh would be kept on building sites etc as an example

i would call them and say that you are usually x but out of work at the moment, they can then decide what category to put you in for employment

Sorry to hear about your job.

How often you are going to use the car too. If you are an office worker, then it's likely you will drive to work in the morning, park up all day and drive home in the evening and use the car all weekend.

An employed person, potentially, can use the car all day, every day....on the road more often and therefore more likely to be involved in an accident....
    Reassuringly expensive
  • not sure but if you're unemployed then your more likely to have an accident, it's probably something to do with the lifestyle.

also i reckon unemployds are more likely to make a fraud claim cos there more desperate for cash?

Do you have any evidence to back up these (IMO) ridiculous statements or have you just plucked them from the air?

  • if i got plenty of cash then i'm hardly likely to fake a whiplash claim, but more likely to do it if i'm skint all the time. that's just common sense surely?

Not everyone who is unemployed is "skint all the time"

Common sense is to understand that not everyone fits the stereo type of the group they happen to be part of at the time.

yeah i know not all of them are like that - just that in general unemployed people are more likely to make a fraud claim than people in employment. it's just common sense, not sure why you disagree with that?

even though not everyone fits the stereo type as you say, it's by using the overall numbers for each group that insurers decide how much to charge you. you can pretend that it's not relevant if you like, but it's one reason why it's more expensive to insure your car when you're unemployed

I imagine its more to do with them being available to drive their car more often and a such more liely to be involved in a crash.
