Hey!
Our dogs (german shep 1 yr old & ridgeback 1 yr old) have always wanted to chew something so we give them these:
http://www.petsathome.com/find/keyword-is-dog+chew/product-is-15746
They come in different sizes for your dog and our dogs love to just sit and chew them! Weve never had any problems with them chewing things they shouldnt because they now know whats ok to chew and whats not. We give them lots of praise when they chew them too and they love them.
The ridgeback even understands the word Chew now and gets very excited when we suggest she has one!I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -

Both rawhide and bones can cause major damage to a dogs throat if it gets lodged in there, or if the bone shatters. I would be very careful of giving the dog your looking after either!
Kongs are great (as has already been said). You can also buy flavoured paste to put inside, but its not cheap. So i always use one of my dogs favourite treats0 -

I want to give it something to avoid it finding its own unsuitable items i.e shoes, wires, the door frame.
My mum got a beautiful french bull mastiff for her birthday (!!) in August aged about 10 weeks.
Its chewing the house to pieces - b*stard!! - phone lines, my bloody boots, antibiotic tablets the garden, everything! I got it one of those smelly meaty bones from P@H, for a couple of quid. It ikes to chew that now, and less of the house - although he still does.
Lucky he's so adorable - I was on the verge of sewing his jaw up (with a hammer!!) when I saw the state of my nice boots!0 -
Hard bones are no good as they can't be chewed - and they could damage a dog's teeth. Chewable raw bones are better - ask the butcher for brisket bones.
If you're not confident about giving raw bones, then just buy a suitable dog chewWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I can second, third and fourth the suggestion for the Kong. The black one is good as its ultra strong. My staff bull terriers are very destructive and although it is starting to go now (well only about the top 1cm), it is the best thing I have ever bought. Make sure you get one that is the right size for the dog though - too big and the dog will lose interest as it can't get a good chew on it, too small and it will be gone in no time!
Hope that helps!

Kira gets bones from the butchers and she has her food in a kong. However as this isn't your dog I wouldn't feed it real bones as the owner might not approve - some people feel very strongly about feeding dogs real bones
Take the kong and fill it with 1/2 and 1/2 of dry food half left to get soft in some water and the other half hard as normal. This means it's possible to really cram it in thereAnd it'll be far more fun to try and get out. As Kira is now an expert in getting stuff out of kongs I tend to freeze hers overnight
(she has two of them - one in the morning and one at night) They keep her happy and she likes just chomping down on them for a while
Sometimes she likes rawhide bones but she's usually not really fussed about them... Pigs ears are a treat but it never lasts more than 5 mins.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Our staffie is a bit of a chewer. She has a Nylabone which has lasted her since last November when we bought it at the Earl's Court dog show. Okay, it's not quite the same shape it was when we bought it, but it was £15 well spent.
She also has a Black Kong in the size one too big for her which she likes, but only when it's filled with something. We use old cheddar cheese and pop it in the microwave so that it's all melted and glued to the sides of it. Smells like pizza, but we've managed to resist a chew ourselves so far!
She also has rubber bones and rings, but they never last long, we have to keep a right old eye on her, or they are in pieces and being eaten.
She has knotted bones made of rawhide as well, but we take them off her when we are not around. She's getting better with these and doesn't eat the whole thing in one go, but throws them around the living room for a while.
And finally (yes, I know it seems we have a lot, but our furniture and shoes have stayed intact!), she has an Everlasting Treat Ball which she hasn't managed to destroy yet.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
