are john lewis reliable on delivery and customer service?

Delivery was spot on and on time and I have heard they have good customer service.

I have had problems with Comet in the past with appalling customer service.

I have bought two TVs from John Lewis this year. Both Samsing. 37 inch for the lounge and 26 inch for the bedroom. Both TVs are great. They are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the 5 year guarantee is great. Avoid Marks and Spencer T Vs they are awfull.
A watched pot always boils. :j
  • Hi Donnie, I recently brought the Sony you have linked to. Its great, After doing quite abit of research between Plasma and LCD I went for LCD as the Sony has lower power consumption also Plasma's tend to have glass screens which whilst stronger if the position of the TV means light reflects on it then the LCD will be clearer to look at.

There is a lot of guff talked about power consumption on plasma TV's, an LCD uses the same power regardless of the picture it is displaying where as a plasma TV will vary it's power used with the picture ie the brighter the picture the more power it uses.

Black levels are great on the Sony 40V4000.

Black levels aren't issue with plasma as black is displayed by turning off the pixel

I have yet to find an LCD that looks any good on a fast moving picture but it's your money :D
Nothing to see here, move along.

I'm well aware of the way both work, but Plasma's overall still use more power even with the fluctuations in power use. You only have to look as "Assumptive Actual Use" figures from manufactures that provide that information. These figures are derived from monitoring the plasma's power consumption watching a TV programme, over a certain period of time. All the figures I have seen show Plasma still use more power than a comparable sized LCD.

unless you watch programmes recorded in pitch black.;)

Im more than happy with the Sony LCD and the black levels and picture is great even for sports. In fact the black levels are a none issue on my Sony. I've had a few people that have visited who have said that the picture looks great on it who have various Flat panels including one that has a plasma.

In fact a had I guy who came to fix something and he kept looking at my TV and telling me how good the picture was :D(and he had a panasonic 37in).

So its money well spent for me.

In regards to pushing certain makes, I visited many retailers and independents whilst browsing for a TV just to get a hands on look at them, the prices and also get numerous opinions from people. One thing of interesting note was I was told that the there are greater profit margins for LG and Samsung for retailers and they try to push them. Now they tend to not be as expensive as the Sony's and Panasonic's for similar spec. So that was quite interesting to hear.

The other thing was that the Panasonic and Sony's were the more reliable than other makes and generally had the best picture.

i was in currys today and guess which brands the woman was pushing to a bloke? yes, lg and samsung. it looked like she had conned him into getting a lg that wasnt even full hd. when she went off to check if they had one in stock i decided to help out the bloke and warned him that lg are rubbish. i told him to get either sony or panasonic or maybe the samsung 40a656.

at the moment i plan to go for the sony tv out of the 3 i have been looking at. the sony gets the overall best reviews out of the 3. it is the cheapest out of the 3 as well. i am just disapointed it isnt 100hz. i am going to try and wait for the january sales coz there doesnt seem to be any discount codes around to tempt me into buying now.

Exact description I'd give of my experience of John Lewis. No idea whether I was simply unlucky with only ever speaking to the few really bad people but it's definitely put JL on my list of companies never to use personally ever.

I realise that, just giving a juxtapose of the same description for the very company that they'd heard about good customer service. Long saga in my case and it wasn't even for me it was on behalf of my parents buying an LCD TV. Basically they won't uphold their price match promise if the price difference is too great. Obviously that's not in the small print so they'll actually start inventing reasons why it's not the same product (a great one was that delivery cost is different, which is a bit odd for a product to be bought and picked up instore). And besides all that I could never have a rational talk with anyone I spoke to either. Conversations went along the lines of:
me:"the refusal for the price match doesn't make sense"
John Lewis CS:"we consider the matter closed"
me:"but the content of the letter (price match refusal) is wrong and I want to discuss it"
JL:"the matter is closed so it doesn't matter what the content is as I'm not going to listen". (I can't remember the exact wording but this is no exaggeration of what they actually said)

    Another time;
me:"for customer service it doesn't seem very customer oriented" (after them refusing to even talk to me about the letters they sent)
    JL:"well you're not a customer are you" !!!!!!

I only have three companies in total on my "never do business with ever" and JL are one of them. The above is only a couple of snippets and if it were for me personally I'd have basically said sod them and gone elsewhere, it was only that my parents that were convinced they'd be better off getting it from JL that meant they eventually did but in our case we actually ended up having to get the CEO's office of JL involved (and they admitted that under their very own terms they were in the wrong). One mistake or one bad person can be forgiven. But they go on my "banned" list if it's systematic at every single point of contact I have with a company and multiple stages of ineptitude and poor CS etc.

In my case it was mostly by phone and got passed from one store to another. Each time was just as awful. Like I said maybe I was just unlucky in who I got each time, but considering ALL I wanted to do was use their never knowingly undersold policy and sticking to their terms to the letter to just order 1 TV shouldn't have been as laborious and time consuming as it was. Just the manner in which they talked to me was enough in itself to put me off them forever. I probably am in a minority of poorly treated by JL but of course my personal experience is the one that's most important for my future purchasing decisions. ;)
