I have been contemplating buying this televsion (or the W4000) for some time now but there are a couple of things niggling at me which I would like to get some views on.
1. I have read that plasma's (in particular Panasonic) work better with standard definition, which although I will purchase a Blu-Ray player for some movies I will not be upgrading to a HD TV source for the immediate future so am I better with plasma?
2. Will I regret not going for 100Hz in a couple of years time when prices drop? I have read that 100Hz is only an essential feature if you are into gaming (which I am not!).
My ideal TV would be LCD, 1080p, 100Hz, 40 inch but have not seen one reallistically priced, plus I am a Sony fan due to being so pleased with previous CRT sets.
Any advice on the above would be much appreciated.

            erm
Which tv?
The panasonic plasma will be better anyways I assure you. Though sony do have good tvs so im certainly not saying DONT buy a sony. The Panasonic will have better movement and will ESPECIALLY display 'darker scenes' better (Something that LCD tvs really struggle to do as theyre all powered by a 'back light'.
Dont read too much into the 100Hz ~ its not important
MOST tvs that will ALLOW a 1080P source arnt in fact ACTUAL 1080P pixel sizes themselves (Again ~ not important though). This means they will SCALE the picture to suit whatever pixel size the actual tv is.
What do you call realistically priced?:idea:0 -
According to the Argos cataloge, 100hz makes a lot of difference!0

Trust me Roddy, I know what im talking about. Argos SELL tvs, they dont really know anything about them. A LOT of 50Hz tvs will beat a similar priced 100Hz tv for picture quality. A tv source is flickered 25 times a second (generally speaking, depends on the format used), which means 50Hz is fine for viewing.:idea:0 -
Realistically priced would be £600-800 although I accept you wont get 100Hz for this would expect 1080p0

Its the mutts nuts for the price
Wont accept 1080p, but rest assured it really doesnt matter
Has the scanning (Not that it matters), 15000/1 contrast ratio (very good) and 3 hdmis (very good):idea:0 -

you say similarly priced well wont that be because the 100hz tv is likely to have a weaker spec in other areas if it is the same price? isnt 100hz supposed to help with clarity when there is alot of movement? like in a footie match.
we are hoping to get a tv soon and are torn between these three.

100Hz is 100 times per second. Sources are only 25 frames per second. So its down to the processors used to 'fill in' the missing frames. Those at the cheaper end of the scale, tend not to fair so well. Im not saying its a BAD thing, just its not so 'cut and dry' as people make out.
And yes, you get what you pay for so if they have 100Hz they have it at the expense of some other feature.
If you MUST go for one of those, its toss up between the Panasonic and the Sony. Though neither are as good as the Panasonic plasma I posted (And all are quite more expensive from there):idea:0 -
i arent keen on plasmas for four reasons. they are heavier, they use more power, they suffer burn in and when i look at tvs in showrooms i cant see any difference in quality between plasma and lcd. the three i am looking at all have very good spec.
i noticed something was mentioned about backlight. on the samsung there is the ability to change the backlight setting.
anything has got to be better than our current tv which i arent impressed with. the lg 32lx2r.0 -

They do suffer from burn in, but after 6 months they clear up and look WAy better than LCD tvs, NEVER compare in a shop as Plasmas take a good 6 months to look their best (And they are NEVER set up right ~ they use mains 'extensions' (NEVER a good thing), they need 'calibrating' and all the extra c*ap switched off and for some reason the contrast is ALWAYS revved up so its hard to tell the difference in ANY tv!)
Changing the backlight setting isnt going to make any difference to dark scenes (or very little)
I would advise AGAINST the Samsung personally, but if you DO go for it, switch off all the extra stuff it has. It makes it 'look' better for a short period, but at the expense of REAL picture quality and detail
Theres a Pan here ~

without properly looking into it im unsure of the model differences.:idea:0 -
i know settings are wrong in shops but they are on all the tvs so it is reasonable to say i can still compare each of the tvs to each other. i know the burn in goes away after a period of time but i dont want to be watching a tv with burn in for 6 months before it clears up.
i think the difference between the two panasonics is one is 100hz and one isnt. my thinking is if i am going to splurge on a new tv then i want it to be full hd, 100hz and bigger than the one we have(37inch or 40inch). i want a reliable model not just in terms of quality picture but also i dont want it to be prone to breaking down. thats the problem with places like what hifi they talk about how good the features are but they dont mention lastability.0
