There are plenty of summer camps for disadvantaged children and/or with disabilities, both here and in the US.
At the camp I worked at this summer almost every child there was funded through donations/scholorships/unions/social care. Many of the kids were in social care and did not know where they would be living once the camp finished.

Go to your Students' Union and ask about Student Community Action and RAG - there are usually lots of volunteering opportunities both in and out of term-time, and you'll get training and CRB checks organised for you.
