    Hi,

I am a 20 year old male student. In the future I would like to a career that involves children. It might seem a little way off, but I was thinking in the summer holidays 2009, I’d like too do something that not only worth while but which would look good on my CV to future employers. I am looking for some kind of children’s summer camps or something similar where I could work in the summer holidays, the problem is I have no idea where too look, I have searched on the internet but nothing, Maybe I am looking to early? It’s just I thought it would be good to start looking early, than look later and find out I am too late!. I am aware that USA take students from the UK to work at summer camps, but if possible I’d like to stay in the UK.

Many thanks if anyone is able to help me with some places/ideas etc.

I would totally reccommend that you reconsider and go to America and work in a summer camp there. I have just returned from spending the last 3 months in America, I went through Camp America and worked at a camp for disadvantaged kids in New Jersey for 10weeks, and then travelled cross America for 4weeks. It was an AMAZING experience! I learnt so much about myself, about America, about working with kids/young people, met so many amazing people, experienced things I would never have ever been able to do back home and had so much fun!

Total cost is about £450, and you get paid about that for the whole summer ($850). But you don't do it for the money, you do it for the experience!

If you want to know more feel free to PM me, though be warned I'll rave on about how amazing it was!

  • Thanks Guys!! I will look into it all!

Btw, I already have a CRB Check so already paid what i have too hee hee

Just to warn you that most employers like to do their own CRB. A freind of mine had one for work but also needed to get one done through his football club where he is coaching kids.
You might be Ok though, but best to check before you start any work.
  • My neighbour done "camp america" and loved it!
    already have a CRB Check
Its likely your employer will require a new one; hopefully they will cover your charges!

    Good luck!

most places (?all) need your CRB enhanced disclosure to be less than 6 months old at the start of the placememnt/job, else you need to get a new one...

some even demand a new one regardless..... although my workplaces have always paid for them to get done.

If you're going to want to work with children with problems (I seem to remember you're hoping to train as a Social Worker) you might be better looking for some project of this kind, rather than summer camps and holidays. Working with children from deprived backgrounds or disabilities is going to be far more useful to you than happy kids with no problems.

You are 100% right! The main thing is I just want to do something worth while this summer, and something that would look great on my CV, and helping children with disabilities would be doing both of these! I will try to look into it!

Thanks very much, You are ace!

What area of the country are you in? There's lots of youth projects around that would love a student in those sorts of areas. Paid work will be much harder to find though

have a look at do-it.org.uk - there are a lot volunteering opportunities in kent but i'd guess a lot won't be so close to you!
    http://www.do-it.org.uk/countysearch.do?distance=5&we=7&activity=0&sa=7&keywords=&mo=7&interest=3&th=7&county=Kent&northing=155000&easting=590600&su=7&scale=kilometers&tu=7&location=Kent&fr=7

other options that may be of interest from completely different ends of the scale in terms of time and location are the samaritans and vso

    http://www.samaritans.org/support_samaritans/volunteer.aspx
    http://www.vso.org.uk/volunteering/youth/

you can also try dedicated children's charities like action for children, barnado's, volunteer reading help etc

    http://www.barnardos.org.uk/get_involved/volunteering.htm

i think it would be really worth your while to make an appointment with your careers service about this as they will know of lots of different oppostunities and will have had lots of experience in helping people to apply. they are usually a fantastic, but underused, resource.
