I lost my phone last week, luckily someone handed it in but it made me think about how much worse it could have been. Ive heard horror stories of lost phones calling abroad for hours.

I phoned o2 today and asked for a bar on my phone to abroad although I would still like calls to uk from anywhere . No they replied

I asked for a credit limit of £40 ( Im on the simplicity £20 tarif) so thats my maximum spend, again they said no .

Does anyone know a way to prevent someone running up a huge bill if I loose my phone again? Reporting straight away isn`t always an option - I like a few shandys.

Three , who I have my dongle with put my limit down from £75 a month to £8 without a problem.

Sorry, but there's no such thing. A limit on calling will be in place to protect the network, not the consumer. Think of it like saying to a supplier - sorry, I'm really hopeless with my property - if I spend more than £40 don't let me spend any more....

The solution to this is twofold - one, PIN protect the handset so that if it is turned off and back on, the phone is locked until the correct PIN is entered. This will ensure any use of the SIM is protected, but ONLY if you turn this on. The downside is YOU have to enter the PIN each time you turn the phone on, but that's a small price to pay.

Secondly, with so many great PAYG deals around (and I'm thinking of the new ASDA rates, using Vodafone) I cancelled all my contracts. Now, if the credit runs out, the phone does too. The ultimate protection!

You should be able to place an international block on your acc, making calling out of the UK impossible. Most (but not all) lost phone end up calling over seas until their blocked.

    Thanks all,
I was on payg but due to work bette off on the simplicity tarif ( basicly £20 unlimited)
I can ban all abroad calls but that means wont be able to ring home from abroad .
Like you say, its not technically impossible, just a money making scam to make large sums of money from people who have recently lost the phone or been robbed.

Anyone who is robbed of something loses as a result of the robbery - unless they pay for insurance against the loss!

My point is that if I loose my phone and the following day realise I nip to Asda and get another for £10-£20 and a free sim again from O2.
If phone gets lost on a night out and I don`t realise untill 12 hours later I could possibly have a bill for 12 hours @ £1 a minute = £720.

I wouldnt mind but my phone has all the options on it to bar certain types of call but O2 claim that they dont know the the security number to set it and I should contact Nokia which is utter nonsense- the code is set by the sim.

In the end I put a total bar on international calls. When I do go abroad , about 4 times a year , I will put my 3 sim in my phone and use that instead. O2 s loss not mine.

You insure your handset, not your SIM!

Mobile phone insurance covers fraudulent calls as well as loss etc of the handset.

i know that, but o2 for example wont offer insurance if you take a sim only deal out, you have to take a new handset out also, and apply the insurance within the first 14 days

You don't have to buy the insurance from o2!

i didnt say you did, i used o2 as a example, as the insurance policies tend to be a bit cheaper going through the particular network as opposed to say p4u or cpw insurance
