Not sure where to post this sorry if wrong place.

I have a really bad smell of smoke in my bedroom, no-one smoke in my house and I know it is coming from neighbours. I cannot say to her about it as what she does in her house is nothing to do with me but can be so bad at times that I am coughing at night and eyes stinging with it. I remember once seeing a airfreshener that takes away the smell of smoke but cannot find it now.I have seen odour eliminators that may help but they are almost £3 !!!! canot have anything smelly as hubby will complain..................just cannot win.

Anyone any ideas of how to take away the smell of second hand smoke. I would add that we keep bedroom windows open to try and help no matter what the weather.

Hubby is going to lift floorboards in bedroom and see if any holes that can be filled but need somthing until he gets around to doing it .

    Hi doelani,

There's an earlier thread with some ideas that should help so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

I bought myself a lovely handbag in a charity shop and noticed as soon as I took it out of the carrier at home that it absolutely reaks of tobacco.I gave it a wipe with a damp cloth but it still stinks. How do I get the smell out?

  • Hello!
    I need your help please!!
I purchased a lovely oilcloth (well not real oilcloth but you know what I mean :)) bag second hand online, and when it arrived it smelt sooo bad of stale cigarette smoke - urgh. Its a lovely bag if I could get it clean so I decided to have a gamble and try washing it, rather than just throw it away as its no good smelling as it does :(
The first time I machine washed it on a handwash cycle, but it still smelt, so I washed it again on a normal 40 degree wash. I;ve done that twice now. I've tried non-bio, bio, vinegar in the rince cycle, but it still smells :( I've dried it outside after each wash, still no luck. The first time I washed it I actually had to wash my machine out with vinegar and a hot wash at it made it smell :( I'm not sure if I'm been over-sensitive, but I'm a non smoker and to me it stinks, there is no way I'd put my stuff in it as it is.
Any ideas what else I could try? Its a baby changing bag so its a satchel style and is also lined in oilcloth. I've thought about putting some bicarb in their to maybe soak up the smell, then wash it again with bicarb and vinegar?
Its so frustrating - its just starting to bug me now but I don't want to just give up - it wasn't cheap cheap (its an expensive bag). I know I should have just asked for a refund and sent it back but the lady I bought if from was selling it because she needed the money - I felt sorry for her which is partly why I bought it in the first place. I'm sure she doesn't realise how much it smells, gosh that would be sooooo embarassing! So if I can't fix it I'll just have to accept it and throw it away . . . but any ideas on how to get rid of the smell would be great.
    Thank you in advance!

I would try bicarb and be prepared to wait for a fair amount of time. I had a pair of trainers that got wet and it made the glue smell like cat pee!!! I don't know if it's feasible but I would cover as much of the bag in bicarb (as a paste or dry) and leave it to absorb the smell. Might take a while and a few applications but worth a try.

My husband works for our local council and todays find was two wicker hamper baskets :j Perfect for next yrs Xmas pamper hampers :rotfl:

HOWEVER... they had removable linings and i have washed them and they have come up clean and fresh, BUT the actual wicker baskets themselves are currently in the garden (getting frosty) because they smell of stale tobacco :( Since being outside for an hour or two it isnt as bad but still i need them cleaned!!
Can wicker baskets be soaked in soapy water? Any tips on getting the smell off?

I would hate to ruin them as they are in tip top condition and are beautiful!!

    TIA

febreeze - but by next xmas the smell will def have gone don't worry.

Just wipe them over with a damp cloth with some detergent on it, and pop them up in the loft til you need them.
