Store-cupboard-ing  is a way of life for me. We were a large family and mother's weekly shopping list was virtually the same each week; she would always buy, for instance, tins of corned beef and cheese each week regardless of what she had in the cupboard. This meant she always had an emergency store cupboard (although probably a tad smaller than mine since I became an OS'er! :p)

On the opposite side of stockpiling, my ex mil kept nothing in the house at all and if visitors turned up she would have to run to the shop to get the makings of a sandwich. ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • ( well obviously toilet rolls come in 4s, but you get my meaning)

Actually I think I am more out of control with non-edible things, such as toilet paper and laundry powder. Since I can't eat it, and it is almost guaranteed to never go off, then I REFUSE  to pay more than a very cheap amount for either.

You should see me start to panic when we are getting short on toilet paper and there STILL isn't a decent special...haha...when there is you should see my trolley...I am so NOT embarrassed by it anymore either...

Otherwise, I rent my house currently and share a laundry with my neighbour, who I also work with, and he is a lovely guy, but must wonder about my 13kgs of laundry powder in a little row of 1kg boxes, which is honestly about 2 years supply at least for me...I use hardly any per load, at least half recommended or a third depending on dirtyness...

I never used to stock up until i had my little one, but now if i see anything on BOGOF that we use regularly i buy loads, i've even convinced oh to knock through into garage so i've got room for a larger freezer and more cupboard space.

I actually think if you do have a sensible sized storecupboard, not only are you ensuring your families comfort if there was to be a short blip in the finances etc but also you are doing others a favour, as if there was god forbid an incident eg flood you would have no need to visit the shops like everyone else and 'panic buy' then :D I would also not be a drain on resources needed for others in more critical need...

I think if you actually keep a store you don't panic buy at all as there is always sufficient stuff at home already  Buying a few extras each week, when the item is on special,of things I already buy is hardly likely to cause a food shortage when there are ample amounts on the shelves for others to buy.

I am never greedy and if I see there are only a few left I only ever take what I need and leave the rest for someone else...not like some people I see :D
  • Hi
currently doing my monthly shop, I found out yesterday that it looks likely I will lose my job in the new year. I am thinking now whilest I can afford it we should be getting some extra food in our monthly shop. I have been looking at getting tin things like tomatoes and other things like rice and pasta, aslo shower gel and other bits. Was hoping for some advice on what would be best to stock up on. Thanks. We are a family of 4 (2 kids 2 adults)

sorry to hear about your job. Your idea of stocking up on tinned goods, dried pasta, toiletries (sp??) etc is a good one, as they have a long life. Oil for the car engine (non technical term I know) is also probably worth getting as it is so expensive, or at least the sort my OH insists on is! You might also think about filling up your freezer with meat and veg if you have one?
  • We have 2 freezers, one we get our bread at the beginning of the month so we always have bread for the month, been looking at meat, will try and cut back aswel and bulk food out more with veg and other bits

  • Will have a look in to the engine oil, thanks

  • maybe some uht milk with a long date, not lots of flour but if you do get it i'd suggest putting into plastic bags, freezing for 24 hours then storiing in plastic tubs, kills the little mites!
