suzybloo, I know what your saying its making my blood boil, I've really enjoyed the programme and had high hopes for them all but I don't know if I can get past parts of the programme like that.....
  • I don't blame the people at all. I do have a friend who doesn't know how to cook much and it isn't that she can't but she just needs someone to show her. I remember teaching her years ago how to make pancakes from scratch. She thought it was amazing. She still makes pancakes and loves doing it. I do need to teach her how to cook other things as tuna pasta and things of the like are about as difficult as she can go at the moment  . She's 21 and I'm 19. I've known how to cook for years and started cooking for myself at around 13. I liked the independance of it.

I don't think people should judge too much but I can see where you are coming from. I say this as they smoke and say about how they can not afford the bus or food to do what he is saying about or the time to do it also. The bit that got me is if you were spending at least £12 a night for the family on DINNER how could you not afford to buy the food that is cheaper?

A home cooked stir fry costs less than a take away as well as taking less time than to figure out what to have, have it cooked for you and take it home! The time factor is not one that I have any sympathy for. If you really want to give your child(ren) and yourself a better life you would make sure you could find the time or a way to do it!

    That's my veiw anyway.

  • It absolutely amazes and saddens me that so many people still live like that, even some of my friends just dont seem to "get it". They are in debt up to their eyeballs and still live off takeaways. Some people live their lives with blinkers. I wish Jamie luck, no, I wish the people he is trying to help luck (Jamie is doing ok as far as I know!). If he can convert just a dozen people to the joys and thriftyness of home cooking, then hes done another good job.

  • I've not yet seen the programme, so can't comment directly on that. However, I need to say that those of us who are lucky enough to be able to cook need to take care not to be too smug. I work with people who are unable to organise their lives. This can be for many reasons (poor upbringing, mental health problems, depression, low self-esteem, etc, etc). They'd love to be able to do more for themselves and their families, but the barriers are simply too much for them.

Many people on low incomes smoke as a way of dealing with the huge stresses that everyday life puts on them.

I'm unable to do basic servicing on my car, and would hate for my mechanic to be scathing about my abilities :o

This is going to be a difficult one to call, I don't wish to be offensive, but considering she was on benefits she certainly had a better home than us, mostly top of the range items, my partner and I are on a very tight fixed income as my signature shows, it annoys me when we are struggling to make ends meet, yet some people on benefit seem to be doing better than us.

    Sorry for the rant.

  • I saw the programme and I think the most amazing thing about it is that Jamie is the one person who is standing out trying to change the future of peoples diets in Britain. He genuinely wants these families to have the same chance of a healthy diet as his family do.

In some ways the programme did focus on young mums but there was also the 80+ year old gent who had never peeled a potato in his life (his wife probably did everything for him as they did in those days) and there were another couple of chaps in there too. One of the reasons they surely focussed on the young mums is that this is the generation that is feeding their kids rubbish. I am 44 and I was taught about nutrition and how to cook at school and my mother taught me baking skills at weekends. These skills do need to be passed on to in order to preserve the future. I have every intention to continue to encourage my children in the kitchen, my 9 year old often gets a recipe book and the hand mixer out when I am at work to create something  , and I am trying to encourage the 16 year old lad to do a bit more and have bought Sam Sterns cookery books for him.

Good luck to Jamie and Rotheram
