Is it possible to get out of a mobile contract?

DS1 begged DH to get him a contract with Three when DH switched to Three from Orange. DH did so - had to take it out in his name as DS1 was too young at the time. Each month DS1 gives his dad the money for the phone bill.

Now, however, DS1 has decided that the top contract with Three (900 units, with one unit being equal to one minute, or to one text) is not enough and he says he can't afford it any more. He often goes over the allowance of units and has had to pay in one month £58 (the contract, I believe was £20 a month, but I could be wrong on this).

He now wants to switch to a contract with Orange which he says will be better value for him.

He has had his Three contract for 6 months. It is an 18 month contract.

Apart from buying himself out of the remainder of the contract, is there any way that he can get out it?

No im afraid your in the contract for the full term, what you could do is knock the line rental down to the lowest lien rental charge, then pay it off, or bide your time and see if teh t&c's change, that would detrimentally affect you, then you could cancel with no penalty charge, did so with o2 a few years ago
  • would it not be an option to phone 3 up and ask to change tariffs on to one that contains more minutes/texts?

it should work out cheaper in the long run.

maybe a good demonstration to DS what a contract actually means!
