Ebico Is Now Expensive Even For Low Users
Options
Its time to abandon ebico.
Ebico new prices effective from
Ebico prices to increase on the 2nd of October 2008
Over the past few months there has been a great deal of coverage in the media of the ongoing developments in energy prices. Wholesale electricity and gas prices have risen by over 40% in the 6 months since April this year. At Ebico, we have made a commitment to our customers to keep our prices as low as possible for as long as possible. But now we have to take steps towards covering our costs. So I am sorry to say that, with effect from the 2nd of October 2008, the price of our EquiGas and EquiPower tariffs will be increased. I will be writing to all customers with details of these increases but, in general, they represent an increase of 31.9% in our gas price and an average of 24.3% for our electricity (prices for electricity vary by region and are available on our EquiPower rates page).
I appreciate that these are very significant price increases and that many customers will be keen to reduce the amount of energy they need to heat their home. If you’d like to know more about the help available to make your home more energy efficient, visit our Insulation grants page.
The gas even for low users (for eg 13,000 kwh) is now just the same as everywhere else, average and hign users ebico is very expensive. Even at the low useage its only £20 cheaper than southern, (yorkshire area payment by quarter cash / cheque for eg.) So pay by any other means such as direct debit, its cheaper elsewhere.
The electricity, is very expensive all round, even average use of 3,000 kwh i can get the electricity at least £110 per year cheaper on standard tariffs elsewhere !!
So much for ebico !!!!!!!! ethics !!! These are also the highest increases across the board than any where else !!

So much for ebico !!!!!!!! ethics !!! These are also the highest increases across the board than any where else !!
The ethics were never that they were cheapest, just that they were fair and all customers paid the same regardless of meter/payment type. It's a big increase no doubt (on a par with others to be honest) but to start making claims up about them is a bit sad really. I think they've helped more people than they've hindered in the past0 -
The increase is not on par with others, it is actually more !!
I have all the calculations based on the big 6 / 7 companies and ebico now works out to be very expensive for low users as well now, never mind average / high.
The figures that I have used from other companies are payment by quarter cash / cheque single fuels, ie, and ebico works out to be expensive even for low users. If you had duel fuel, and or paid by direct debit, tariffs are cheaper still and I have only used standard tariffs, ie. not included internet ones. So this is how i know ebico is very expensive, i.e more than others now, even for low users.
They are also aware of this too weeks ago, as i sent them the calculations / comparisons based on increases that were an average of the other big companies. My predictions also proved correct, as i anticipated 30% increase on gas, and 25% increase on elec, but some were sceptical of my findings with following southern. Unfortunately i have been proved correct.0 -

On my calculations on my usage of 10,500kwh at 3.77kwh I can't find a cheaper supplier using any of the comparison sites? Which suppliers would be better for that sort of low usage out of interest?0 -
If you are a medium to high user, unless you wish to 'subsidise' those that pay in 'unusual' ways and/or you don't mind paying over the odds for your fuel to support a 'not for profit' organisation, then you shouldn't even be looking at Ebico, to be honest.
This rise really does beg the question, though: Considering they make no profit (although they do frequently make a 'surplus'), err, how come their prices are, for a large amount of fuel users, so uncompetitive? Economies of scale? The fact is that Ebico customers aren't really avoiding enriching the coffers of at least one of the Big 6, either, are they?
Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
Well, thats my electric switched, although have to wait 6 weeks for it to go through.
Switched to scottish power, saving of £110 per year on the electric alone on a standard tariff, than being with ebico, based on average 3000 kwh a year. Thats quite a saving just on 1 fuel alone, and shows just how expensive ebico is.
ebico new price for yorkshire elec 14.07 inc vat 24.5 % increase
3,000 kwh (average use per year) = £422
scottish power yorkshire pay by direct debit (discounted energy 3 % off rates)
Tier 1 14.326 inc vat, ceiling 900
Tier 2 08.816 inc vat
Based on average 3000 kwh, yorkshire region
Total = £314
or
Scottish Power, yorkshire pay by direct debit standard rates
TIER 1 14.769 inc vat, tier 1 ceiling 900
TIER 2 09.089
Based on average 3000 kwh, yorkshire region.
Total = £323.79
or
Scottish Power yorkshire pay by quarter cash / cheque
Tier 1 17.236 inc vat, ceiling 900
Tier 2 10.665 inc vat
Based on average 3000 kwh, yorkshire region
Total = £379.09
You can save £43 per year by paying by quarter / cash rather than with ebico, nevermind direct debit with £110 saving on 1 fuel alone !! Based on that, probably even key card users are likely paying over the odds on being with ebico. So much for ebico ethics !!0 -
What are the straight forward prices from S power that are giving you this saving?
My new Ebico prices from 2nd Oct will be 17.12p day time and 6.37p night rate, both include VAT.
and no standing charges.0 -

You were going on about how expensive ebico were 3 weeks ago and stated that SP would be cheaper for you then even after the price increase SP had introduced at the beginning of this month.
You were also aware that ebico were planning on increasing their prices

It appears you've been paying over the odds for months - not a very good moneysavingexpert."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

That'll be the East Midlands Region then
Scottish Power Rates:
19.805p for initial 225kWh normal units per qtr
12.310p for remaing normal units
6.092p for low rate units
Also you can get £6.25 per qtr rebate for prompt payment within 10 days of date of bill (or via DD on receipt of bill).
It's very tempting...
£31 via quidco too!"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

I was hoping with the information I had sent ebico (showing that other companies were already much cheaper than before their anticipated rise), and their good will ethics, that i would be proved wrong. Unfortunately, i was proved correct with my assumptions, I should have kept listening to my head, rather than my heart . Besides it is only approx 4 weeks ago, so I have only lost by approx 4 weeks. As for any period prior to that, I switched from my home supplier, so i was already saving, but not as much as i could have.
I am a good enough money saver, to have predicted / anticipated this large rise from ebico though ;p0 -
If your a very low user - and i dont class 10500 as very low tbh - then they are still cheap due to the lack of standing charge or tier 1 rates. Dont forget they also do these rates for prepayment meters.
Good company who do a good job tbh.0
