Edinburgh - Princes Street - Rant!

  • Think I'm turning into a grumpy old woman at the age of 39! After nearly breaking my neck tripping over a broken paving slab and having phoned the council to alert them to the appalling state of pavements near where I live I was told the budget was 'very tight '. Not too tight to spend countless thousands of pounds on a firework display in town on Saturday though! This council really is a joke...maiking out they're green but blasting thousands of kilos of explosives into the winter night , even though they know they're not ecologically sound and they're dangerous for the old buildings in town, which surveyors have identified as such. And don't get me started on the roadworks!!!!!

I try to avoid Princes Street these days, there are no shops that interest me.Then you have George Street which is just plain snobby. Oh and the terrible traffic congestion.

    Trams.. ha!
Before throwin millions away to get a high tech fair ground ride going through princes street, they should of thought about upgrading shops and surrounding areas. Mind you, it is just an expensive tourist attraction

But yes, i completely agree about the tat on the streets now.

I have to join in with this "RANT" about Princes Street, Working for the Ambulance Service I have noticed a huge increase in falls/trips in Princes street area.

I makes me wonder what the hell ECC are doing about it?

Even moving down Leith Walk - There are many deep trenches that many people have fallen down due to them not being correctly fenced off.

I am like many other member I now avoid Princes Street

    * ECC = Edinburgh City Council

  • Anyone thinking of coming to Edinburgh please do the residents of Edinburgh a favour and avoid the Tartan Tat shops especially the ones that blast music into the neighbourhood and display all their merchandise outside their shops. The music and the clutter drives the people living in the vicinity bonkers and makes the Royal Mile look like an Eastern Bazaar. The shop-keepers are aware of this but they dont care. Lidls are currently selling kilts and the rest of the regalia at a very good price. - Perfect for Burns Night.
  • Princes Street is absolutely murder on the weekends

Luckily I work not too far away from the city centre, so I just pop in at lunchtime during the week if I need something urgently, otherwise I just buy stuff online.

And don't get me started on all the people who stand along the street wanting money for charity...
  • The most annoying thing about Princes Street is getting to the end and then having to walk all the way back to the other end to where you parked your car, passing all the same shops that you just did.

I tend to use George Street as my thoroughfare and nip down either Castle, Frederick or Hanover Street to get to a certain shop on Princes Street. The maniacs that walk up and down Princes Street seem incapable of walking like a normal human being and being shoved isn't my idea of a great day out.

Since Princes Street was closed last Sat (or the sat before) I think it is really quiet now. I dont think there is enough room for trams as the roads are small and not wide enough. AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!! Edinburgh is a nightmare just now.

Do you think Edinburgh should be getting trams????

What are your reasons for liking/disliking the idea?

Me personally I hate the idea. The roads are not wide enough and the traffic will definately get worse. Its now taking me 40 mins to get to work that used to be a 15/20 min journey
I personally think they should have used the money on making better roads and fill in all the potholes. Edinburgh is a historic City. Why ruin that? xx
