Have just come back from Scotland today, had a great time, fantastic country, scenery and people but as a first time visitor to Edinburgh I have to agree about Princes Street. I was aware of the problems before I went of the Tram system being built and as a visitor it was very off putting.

It was the only thing that put me off though, had a great time apart from that.

Nevermind, soon we're going to have a fantastic trams network at the cost of £700 million which will make Edinburgh perfect

As a West coaster who has lived in Edinburgh for 10 years, I love this city and will not be moving back to the West, but would agree that Princes Street is not what it could be. That said, I think George Street is fantastic.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

Just remembered about this thread last night. Emailed my mate who works for Visit Scotland. His reply was:

I work for visitscotland.com which is different. However, they could telephone 0131 472 2222 to ask about their issues. I do wish they would realise that not everyone likes bagpipes!

I personally think they should bulldoze most of Princes Street - they could keep Jenners and Frasers but the rest should go then totally rebuild the street. It would probably work out cheaper than the tram system they are laying at the moment and they did it in Munich (which I visited over the summer and there are some really lovely buildings) when it was destroyed during the war!

Princes Street is a mismash of different styles and cheap tartan tat stores now which is NOT what a capital city should look like. Glasgow city centre looks much better and that's why a lot of the top end shops have outlets in Glasgow rather than tacky Edinburgh.

I agree about Princes Street total nightmare these days, shopping in Edinburgh isn't great much prefer Glasgow. Much better shops in Glasgow and access to shops is much better.

I have to go to Edinburgh quite a bit on business and at the moment hate going due to all the disruption with the trams. Parking in Edinburgh is awful whereas in Glasgow there are plenty of car parks in the city centre.

I totally agree, I stay in Edinburgh but Glasgow, Dunfermline, Stirling, Livingston is where i prefer to shop as its a nightmare in Edinburgh just now. I'll go up at christmas time tho :) Really like it then. :D

  • Maggiesoup,

I would love to join your campaign to get all the ‘tartan tat’ off the streets of Edinburgh and back inside the shops and all the music stopped. I am however particularly interested in the Royal Mile as this is where I live. I suppose it’s all part of the same problem.
Councillors are aware of the problem, PRS is aware that shops are playing music without a licence, shopkeepers are aware that the music is upsetting local residents, Environmental Health are aware, the Scottish Parliament is at the foot of the Royal Mile politicians walk pass on a daily basis, they are aware of the problem, the Evening News prints an article about once a month about the Tartan Tat problem yet not a lot changes.
