ok so DVD recorders confuse me....
i am looking at getting one but people have told me to wait because the manufacturers have still not decided which of the 2 formats to use? is this true and if so is there a model that plays both already.
Cheers

Thats a shame as I want to record speech to an audio CD, but it is for a group of older people who need a box that will work just like a tape recorder. It seems that CD-Recorders are hard to find and cost more than a DVD-writer.
actually I read a review that said this Liteon 5005 -can- work as an audio recorder; it would need a mic pre-amp to record speech, but it did say it would record audio CDs. if I find the review again I'll post the link.0 -
in the spec, it says
no receiver
but it has a tuner
someone can enlighten me with the meaning of these?
thanksLife should not be taken seriously, as no one would get out alive0 -

There is no standard format, and probably never will be until Blue-laser machines arrive in a year or two.
The current main types of recordable DVD are DVD-R and DVD+R. Both are playable on most modern DVD players after formatting the recorded disc. In addition there is DVD-RW and DVD+RW, these are re-writable discs that can be used more than once, and in my opinion is the most useful.
There are lots of arguments about which is the best format. I have been using a Philips DVD recorder for a few years now which uses the DVD+R/RW discs.
Another type of disc is the DVD RAM disc. These cannot be played in conventional DVD players, but are used in Panasonic DVD recorders and some others.0 -

A tuner means it can record from a TV tuner built in for recording normal analogue TV channels, just like a VCR.
A receiver is normally a radio with an amplifier, and is fitted to some home cinema DVD players that include Dolby 5.1 speaker systems.0 -
and to confirm this is dual format +r/rw -r/rw and as a bonus will record to vcd / svcd, a fairly rare feature.Waddle you do eh?0

I have a 5005 recorder and it has a simple interface and options compare to my pannny and sony dvd recorders.
It does record audio cds but has no editing features like a standalone cd recorder, though you can use normal data cds which my yamaha has to use audio cds. You could use it to record radio from a freeview tuner or from another external source.
You can record on DVD-+R/W and use normal cds to record VCD and SVCD. The liteon sets the right options in it's guided menu.
It has a mono tuner but will record freeview sound as mpeg audio and not Dolby Digital 2.
It has no editing features that I know of.
It can be updated to remove macrovision and provide a 3 hour mode. The 3 hour mode i don't think is full resoultion like my sony 720x5760
