nokia N96 or samsung innov8 / i8510

Hi, I am in mth 17 of 18mth orange contract.
My N95 I had was FULL of problems from about month 7 but I just suffered them as I couldn't be phoneless for 3 weeks while Nokia sorted it out. Saturday it died. Screen went pink/yellow/green, icons started moving, then black. It has had it.
Orange said I can now upgrade and I wanted the N96. I got my N95 through a dealer and am happy to do so again.
My first question, the Samsung is free on my existing tariff and the N96 £39.99. Every month I go over my tariff by appx £10.00, so over 17mths £170.00. This is using 0800/0845 numbers. Would I get away with using this for bargaining the N96 to free of charge?? Plus, I have had an orange contract phone for 6 years now...? I dont want to cancel my contract, lose my number and set up again (on the same tariff!!!) just to get a 'free phone' when orange claim to offer existing customers the same deal as a new one.
Secondly, I am amazed with picture quality on N95, so I know N96 will be good. Now I have seen this samsung, 8 mega pixels.... reviews all look good, better than nokia, but past experience with 5 mega pixel samsungs are awful, nowhere near as good as N95. Anyone seen the samsung quality??
Thank you for your time.

Go for the Samsung. The N96 is practically the same in specifications as the N95 except it has a DVB-H digital TV receiver, DVB-H is not available in the UK. I've heard it also has a bad battery life. The Samsung device has pretty much the same features as the N96 and uses the Symbian operating system (same as Nokia). It's also packed with extras including a really cool 120FPS slow motion video record. The camera quality is also said to be very good.

Got to agree with Graz-D. It's not even been released and I think the N96 has already been trumped by the Samsung i8510.

I played with the Samsung at the weekend and although more megapixels doesn't necessarily equal better quality, the images are very good. They're noticably better than my N95 and it's easier to get good results.

I guess it depends on what matters to you most on the phone.
  • Thank you for your posts.
I must admit, the more I read, the more I am tempted by the Samsung.
I have always been a nokia fan though, I had one samsung and it drove me mad, E900 I think it was.
I agree, more MP doesnt equal better quality. The other half tried explaining why the other night. His 5 MP Samsung camera is c*** compared to my now dead N95, BUT.... he has had it for 20mths now and not a single fault/software error, NOTHING!
TBH I am not a gadget freak, there are things on the N95 I have never used and things I still find I have never ever seen before. I never used it to its full capacity. The camera is the most important thing for me, plus I like chunky phones.
I heard about that TV digital thingy... yet they still plug it as a feature you cant live without even though we have not got it here...
But then, I have a TV at home, I have sky +, I have a laptop, I have a PC.... I dont need any of those gimics! Just a decent camera!
    Samsung it is then!!!
    Thank you

Don't forget that if your N95 is less than 2 years old then it is still covered by the Nokia 2yr warranty. i know you want a different phone, but when you receive one dont forget to get the N95 repaired by Nokia( any nokia service centre will arrange this ) because you can then sell it/keep it as a spare etc/ just a thought.....
  • REALLY? 2 years? I thought it was only a year..... that is interesting...! I was planning on the usual hand me down to my dad after I had finished with it... does that still apply even though I cancelled the worthless insurance during the first month??
  • I found it! Thank you

    Twenty-four (24) months for the mobile device and twelve (12) months for accessories (whether included in the mobile device sales package or sold separately) other than the consumable parts and accessories listed in (b) and (c) below;
  • after a few hours umming and ahhing, I ordered the samsung upgrade yday at 5pm.
Delivered this morning at 10am via city link, that was impressive!
Fab phone, VERY similar to my N95 in terms of menu, features etc so I guess almost a rip-off of the N96.
So easy to use, brilliant camera, solid phone.
PLUS none of the horrid nokia faults... I hope....
Phoned Nokia, there is a repair shop near me, will fix it FOC as it is software so the N95 lives on and I can sell it to my dad.
    Hahaha..
    Thank you guys and girls.
  • i would also take advantage of the 2 year warranty and get it fixed up before it ends. then when it comes to an upgrade (i will be getting the N96), you can keep it as a very good spare for travelling on holiday/business or sell it. :)thanks for all the other tips too :)

Remember one thing The N96 is NOT a successor to the N95's, the N85 is!

The N96 has no 3d chip acceleration the Samsung has and is better than the N96 and the n85.

hey papercut, how much a month is your contract and what does it include.

phoned up this afternoon and was given 400 mins, 1000 texts and unlim web for £30/month for 18 months, phone is free, toss up between i900 and i8510 both same deal and went for i8510......not sure if this is good or not, having second thoughts, phone arrives later in the day
