We plan to put down engineered wood (or solid, depending which is cheaper after our last trip to B&Q) downstairs - living room, dining room and library/music room. We were thinking to put it down in the hallway as well, but now we are also considering tiles in the hallway. We have a cat and occasionally we think he decides that the place just by the door is an excellent place to use as a loo (although he has litter tray at the other end of the hallway!), and only does that when we are not at home, so I would hate to come back and find my newly laid wooden floor 'christened' with cat pee - I bet I would never get the smell out, and probably would ruin the floor there.

I really don't like laminate and would not put it anywhere. Currently there is laminate in dining room and bathroom. Dining room will go out when we get to work on that room, bathroom will stay. It was redone by the landlord 3 years ago or so, and all is in decent working condition, so we are not going to spend any money there for now. First there are other 10 rooms/areas plus garden and garage to sort out!

So much for my day out......guess what I did today? Yip...I bought more paint. I'm destined to have no life until this is done and dusted, I'm as well giving in now. :rotfl:

I've got both engineered wood and also laminate in here. The wood looked lovely when new but it has scratched badly and faded in patches and this stuff was expensive. The laminate is older than the wood floor and it's immaculate.

I do think some laminates look seriously cheap and not so nice but a lot of the better ones these days are really quite good imo. I would never spend the money on a wood floor again. I was told I expected too much and wood will dent and scratch and that's part of the attraction apparently....but not to me. :D

My bugbear at the moment is lightshades/fittings. I've spent ages looking for something for the small bedroom and they are all either too big/too fancy/too expensive. I decided I would just buy a shade instead at least for the time being but they're just as bad cost wise. I saw a nice (imo) silvery thing in B&Q today....£32! For a shade! (I am my Mother :o)

  • We have engineered oak in the dining room and it will go in the hall when we do that room. I hate laminate and if i could would have real wood but dont like the idea of it on concrete base hence going for engineered in the end. At our last house we had tiles thru hall/kitchen/toilet and liked them for ease of use etc but they are cold but slippers solves that, will tile the kitchen and bathroom but not the hall this time.

Currently have a skip at house, good fun filling that with all the junk out of the garage and the bit behind it - i wondered where the old kitchen had gone and turns out in the garden behind the garage!!!

Some progress, our bedroom has been done and pretty much finished - just need a bot of coving to be replaced! Thinking of getting a new front door before winter sets in but unsure, will get some quotes and see if that helps he decision!

Has anyone used spaceboard in the loft? im thinking of getting a small area done for storage as much as i dont want to store in the loft some boxes and christmas tree will need to be in reality!

Just dropped my wife an email at work suggesting decorating the living room in one big swoop this weekend. Hopefully she'll come back with a convincing YES!

Nope. :( You'd think I was asking for something fantastically unusual or bespoke.

I think I'll write to every major retailer I can think of and badger them into opening a branch in the Highlands. :D We seriously need more choice up here.

You've no idea how excited I got when I heard Screwfix were supposed to be opening in Inverness. :rotfl:

I need to go back on Saturday so will trawl round the material shops and see if I can get some made.
