Sky Broadband: good, bad or indifferent

Been on the phone today with Sky, renegotiating my tv package. Any way, got to the inevitable sale patter for the broadband.

Sounds attractive compared to say AOL. What experiences have you guys had with Sky broadband?

Particularly interested in whether it is reliable. I'm presently with AOL. Since the migration to Talk Talk, I have had nothing but connection problems.

Cheers

we have had Sky broadband for around 12 months now and have had no problems. The bonus of free evening and weekend calls wiht SKy talk means my telephone bill is around 50p a month. :j I still pay my Phone line to BT. It was advised on this site but i cant remember why but i do remember it was a good idea to keep it separate.

Another good thing, Sky's contact number is 0844 which to none sky members it around 5p a minute but its free for us
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Ive had it for about 12 months and never had a problem.....we get broadband/tv-sports,movies etc included and phone - free anytime plus for an extra £5 we get 'free' international calls but thats as long as you dont speak for over an hour. You can however hang up and ring back. Im not sure of the exact cost of the whole package but its about under £30......excellent deal - but dont settle for the first package they tell you about - negotiate!!
    'Normal' is a dryer setting.
  • I was with Aol but I switched to Sky in january i went for the max broadband package.
    Sky broadband has been excellent.

    Hi,
I too use sky tv and sky broadband and have not had a problem with the service, before that i used tiscali and talktalk which i had countless problems with. I pay an extra £5 for the broadband to get the higher speed there was another higher than that for £10 but the speed i currently use is high enough.

I'm also with Sky and first signed up to their max package. We had lots of initial problems which took over three months to sort out . This was right at the outset when they first offered broadband and we got a free in-home set-up, so the fault wasn't down to me :o.

We finally found out that our BT phone-line just couldn't support anything over 2mgb so now we have their minimum package which costs us nothing ;). To be perfectly honest it seems just as fast as our previous provider and after the initial glitches everything is fine.

I am just in the process of moving my calls package back to BT though since SkyTalk stopped the access to other providers.

    Best of luck:D

OK to use Sky for calls and broadband, but remember if you move line rental to Sky, then if you decide you no longer want Sky TV then you lose broadband and Sky line rental and you have to pay another provider to take back the phone line, be it BT or other.

Though maybe best to have Sky for TV and broadband and BT for line rental with calls via Primus and 18185 - this is the better solution of them all if you plan to have Sky broadband.

Remember you never know when a time might come that you have to cut back and with all your eggs in Sky's basket you can't cut back, it's lose all if you want to drop the TV for a while.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • Well, finally did. Obtained my MAC from AOL - thats another story. Signed up to Sky mid package. Only 5 sniffs a months. Didn't bother with the phone rental, as too much would be tied up with Sky - never know when you need to cut back.

If you line rental is no longer with BT and is for example with Sky and you find you can no longer afford Sky TV then you also lose the use of their broadband and phone line / service as this is subsidised by the TV.

You then have to move back to BT or another line rental provider, there are a few providers out there that like Sky resell line rental.

BT usually charge £125 to return, though have lately had offers where it is £30, others charge around £100.
