  • If possible, can you encourage your son to join a society or a sports team? I really didn't enjoy university for the first few weeks but I joined the women's rugby team and they really brought me out of my shell, gave me friends and there would be someone to go out with. I'm sure there will be something he is interested in and plenty of sports teams encourage people with no experience, just enthusiasm.

I'd also recommend sports clubs and societies. I was part of the football team in my first year, it helped because I travel in. But it also took up some time and I was lucky I had a timetable that would permit me training and going to matches.

I'd also warn, that although it doesn't happen everywhere, just be careful what teams or clubs you join. Make sure there are none of that initiation crap. At my uni there wasn't anything like that but it varies from place to place.

Just wanted to add- I lived with three engineers in my third year at university. They now are respectively: working in engineering having gained PhD and various cool awards etc; and two of them are sound engineers. I can tell you: they mostly worked very hard but they all did LOADS of other things at uni and played just as hard! And it was all of our final year that we lived together. I actually found that the people who worked hardest played hardest too (medics and engineers) whereas the History and English people who had 6 hours lectures a week, weren't half as interesting!
