Help with cheap train ticket to Edinburgh from Manchester please

I took advantage of the Travelodge sale and booked 4 nights in Edinburgh in December BUT only now am I able to book a train ticket and it's going to coat £152 for 2 people!!!! When the the sale was on I looked up the advanced train ticket and it was showing £20 which I thought was very reasonable and made the trip seem a bargain but with sort of cost does not make it a viable break for us.

I know the time table for Virgin has only just been put online, does anyone know if advance deals will appear. Does it have something to do with it being December

Manchester to York, Single £9
York to Edinburgh, Single £22
Edinburgh to Manchester, Single £11

Leeds, York or Newcastle seem obvious points to try and split the journey into cheaper singles, but if you're willing to look into further options it may work out cheaper.

Tried this and got

Manchester to York Single £20.10
York to Edinburgh Single £69.50
Edinburgh to Manchester £46.50

Single would be £136.10 for both of us well you can do the maths

Off to try a few more splits.

Can anyone tell me if they ever give cheap advanced tickets in December Manchester to Edinburgh please?

Just tried transpennine express offers and they have £40 return for both of you. Its to Edinburgh Waverley which appears to be central. What dates are you going? You need to book advance single tickets.
These are the dates I tried Mon 1st Dec 7.45am arrive 11.10am to Edinburgh
Fri 5th Dec 15.52 arrive 19.20 in Manchester
I tried peak times so I'm sure they will be available on other dates and times

What are the dates? Cos National Express are only booking up to 12 December for York to Edinburgh and they have lots of £19 each singles showing from York to Edinburgh on Sat 6, returning Tues 9 Dec, and there are advance singles from manchester to york showing at £6 each. So that would be cheaper?

Virgin trains have £46 single journey for 2 people on 10 December thats Edinburgh to Manchester with a change at York but if your dates are near the holiday time then possibly there aren't many cheap journeys.

Dates are 15 - 19 December. Edinburgh Waverley is the station I want from Manchester Piccadilly.
