new boiler

Options
My mother needs a new boiler apparently, and has just had a quote from a local firm for a condensing boiler for £4,000. They install glow worm boilers.

Obviously, it difficult for those without a crystal ball to say whether this is good value, but it would be helpful to know if anyone thinks this make of boiler is good. And if anyone does have a valid opinion on whether this is good value, it would be much appreciated.

Sounds expensive to me! Does this boiler have a stainless steel heat exchanger that is guaranteed for at least ten years?

If that is a straight exchange, ie no pipework or radiator work, then the price is very expensive.
I had Bg replace my boiler last year for £2300 with their summer discount scheme, and even that was considered over the top.
I was going to suggest getting a quote from a local Corgi plumber, then I realised you had!
PS The two boilers BG offered me were a Worcester Bosch and a Glowworm, and they had to maintain them so must have thouight they were reliable.
  • Apparently, there needs to be some new pipework, but not exactly sure what.

Thank you both for helpful replies, these are exactly the comments needed
  • Good afternoon: Your Mum needs a couple more quotes to compare like for like. What does the quote include eg. powerflushing, Boiler Buddy/Magnaclean, TRVs, programmable roomstat , what type of system does the property have at the moment what part of the UK, site conditions i.e. flueing. state of water/gas supply etc. ? Lots of variables at play.;)
Glow-worm is a mid-price range boiler: my OH usually installs Vaillant and Viessmann but does recommend the Glow-worm Flexicom combi range if space is at a premium (it will fit in a kitchen cupboard and has rear flue access).

Is your mum over 60? She could get £300 towards a new boiler, or maybe more if she is on certain benefits

That is very expensive. My son always fits Vaillant. I had one about 2 years ago, brill. Boiler was about £1000. Should be about same to fit with pipework ,flue et.

Vaillant and Worcester Bosch seem to generally be regarded as the market leaders. I recently went for a mid-range Vaillant 831 from https://www.vhsdirect.co.uk (including an extra year's warranty) which fitted, with a new flue and some adjustment to existing pipes will be about £2300 or so inc. VAT.

The OP's quote is very expensive (even Gritish Bas would probably not charge that much for a boiler replacement) so any quotes obtained, need to be like for like e.g. similar spec/quality boilers. Unfortunately some Corgi's think that they have a licence to print money, so get several quotes to eliminate the sharks!
