I've made potato cakes for tea, but they are a bit bland.
I boiled some potatoes, mashed them, added plain flour and fried them. what could I add to give them some flavour? I was thinking of putting some salt, but I haven't got any!
I don't like salt as a rule; I've got some salted butter though, perhaps I could add that.0 -
Salt is a flavour enhancer so a little bit will make most things taste better. I'd definitely put some into a potato cake, at the very least they'll be far less salty than anything you could buy!0

We used to have these for tea when we were kids but with chopped up bacon and onion in them (fry the onion and bacon in some butter and thenmix in with the mash before frying) MmmmmmmmmmMortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0

Thanks for that. Next time I make them I'll put a bit of salt in.
Adding onions sounds lovely as well, I don't eat meat, but I bet I could use vegetarian bacon style rasher instead. I'll give it the ma try.
Thanks for your responses. I'm having my own storecupboad challenge, so I'm making stuff I've never tackled before, with mixed results!0 -
Ive made them before and just added salt, pepper and mixed herbs to give them a bit of flavour. My DH smothers them in tomato sauce anyway so I dont know why I bothered lol

When I make them I use leftover mash which already contains salt, pepper, butter and milk. Sometimes I add scallions for a bit of extra flavour.

pepper, onion (Spring onions are always nice), herbs, maybe try paprika or chilli powder?0

Chives are also quite nice chopped very finely:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I have two small portions of mash that I have taken out of the freezer but they aren't going to go very far between two adults and I have forgotten to get some spuds in.
Can someone please tell me the easiest way to make potato cakes please?
I have already added milk and butter to the mash when made originally.
I did do a search but I think a lot of the recipes are embedded in other threads and I need to find a recipe quite quicky.

Cold mash in bowl, add white flour (& a bit of salt) & mix well (you will know when its enough).
Roll out just over half inch thick, cut into squares, circles, triangles (anything) & fry lightly till golen on both sides.
Split & butter.0
