I wonder whether the crossword compiler did actually mean 'strew' (which would be a good straight answer to the clue), but it possibly got typed in wrong, so now the answer is 'straw' whether they like it or not?
The answer was "straws", i.e. third person singular present tense, in response to a clue which was also, of course, in the third person singular present tense "spreads").

Neither "straw" nor "strew" would be appropriate answers - assuming the compiler of the clues knew what s/he was doing.

Why do you say that? It's on a page with a .co.uk suffix, and is on an eBookers page with a comp I've already entered, to win £500 sterling.

Oh ok then, I aplogise - just it asked me to sign in and when it does that normally means it's Irish.

Ah, right. That happens to me sometimes. It's as if they've changed the cookie, or it's disappeared from your PC. One day, I clicked on two links here, and two windows opened, one of which went straight into PB, whilst the other asked me to sign in. Odd.

The 'crosword compiler' is almost certainly a computer with a limited vocabulary. That's probably why we keep getting the same words appearing time after time, e.g. shampoo, Austria, etc. It is surprising therefore that an 'archaic' word such as 'straws' appears!

I do know that at least three people who frequent this place are able to post the solution as an image, and others, notably jules-2005, have listed the answers as text. Perhaps they would be kind enough to keep things going during - and perhaps after! - my absence.
I'm sure one of us will be able to do that while you're away, Droopsnout, but am not so confident the solution will be posted as early as 12.08 AM! (Not by me anyway - I'm such a dormouse :o)

Have a nice time, Droopy, and remember to come back :)

Quite so. But a human would presumably have programmed the clues and answers. So why on earth would that person pair up those two words? I have noticed that spellings are UK rather than US, so the applet is designed for UK and Irish English use. PB is an Irish company originally, so could this "straws"/"spreads" puzzle be due to an Irish usage of the word?

Who knows, but it just doesn't make sense in my book.

sorry if this has already been posted but on the side of the link above it says that you can get a £12.99 cd wow voucher and a £10 topshop voucher.

neither of these are available in the rewards section, which the links take you too but are they perhaps just about to surface? by topshop does it just mean a top shop ot the actual clothes chop - awesome if so
