Yes, I read about that case.
The way it works is that customers put their deposit bottles into the deposit machine, and the machine tallies up the deposit and spits out a deposit coupon, which the customer then takes to the checkout for a cash refund, not points or anything. Children or poor people often womble abandoned bottles lying around, feed the machines and cash the coupons, all of which is entirely legal and and accepted behaviour (since it helps clean up the environment, too).
Two such coupons worth €1.30 had been found in a Kaiser store and kept in a till drawer in case someone came and claimed them as lost. After ten days of nobody turning up to claim, the cashier refunded these two coupons to herself. Since she had not deposited bottles worth €1.30 in the machine herself, this is legally theft, and that's why the courts decided her dismissal was justified.
My personal opinion is that dismissal was over the top and a written warning should have done, since the company she worked for was not even out of pocket. (The bottles had been put into the machine by somebody, and no refund was given twice.) It is rumoured that the company took the chance to get rid of her because she is with a trade union. They are within their rights, though. Legally, the case is clear. Tough, really. She should have known better.0 -
We tried Lidl tommy sauce and it was OK but will be going back to Heinz. I guess it depends how often you have it. We don't have it much so when we do we would prefer to stuff that tastes nice IMO
I've mentioned this on another thread - I think Heinz ketchup has changed over the last few months, its much more runny and not so tasty as it used to be; I like my ketchup so I use it a lot and notice the difference. I'll be trying a cheaper one, maybe Lidl next time I'm there... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Have you tried M&S's Tomato sauce? It's pretty tasty - we've been using it for a couple of years now and DH won't look at anything else these days!0

Hello all, first post.
Couple of Lidl spots that are worth sharing.
Red Wine: £2.99 South African Cab Sav-Shiraz (one with Springbok on front)
Knockout red, real full and fruity with just a bit of spice. Best bottle of red we've had in ages and we've been working our way through the well-known Aussie brands of late! Just gone back and bought a case.
Jalfrezi Curry Sauce: Made a really good curry with this. Added a bit of chili too which gave it a nice kick.
Murphy's is £2.60 for 4 cans too. Good sub for Guinness which is much pricier. I think I prefer Murphy's, it's a bit smoother.0 -
Oh - and a bad one:
Trattoria Alfredo chilled Ham/Mushroom pizza - bland and tasteless.0 -
All the publicity the media have been giving the discount chains have certainly caused a lot of jams at the till.the prices are also increasing rapidly,Lidl bread flour is now 79P and the 200g bars of chocolate that were 59p,and occasionally 49p are now 99p and there are lot more rises!.

ALDI used to do TWO meat and Potato pies for 95p but they have replaced these with a SINGLE one for 69p!! That's the equivalent of about a 40% price rise. I liked the old style too as they were quite peppery.0

We have been shopping at Lidl for the past few months but in the last 2 weeks or so prices have gone through the roof.
At the same time the quality of the fruit and meat sems to have gone downhill.
We did our shopping this week at B&M, Cooltrader and home bargains, then got our fruit and veg from the greengrocer.
Saved a fortune, milk was only £1.05 for 2 litres at cooltrader0 -
Staroslav beer back at Aldi for 99p a bottle :cool:0

I don't think we have those three retailers in Essex.
I did a quick google on Cooltrader and home bargains and found myself in Wigan. We have been shopping at Lidl for the past few months but in the last 2 weeks or so prices have gone through the roof.
At the same time the quality of the fruit and meat seems to have gone downhill.
I wonder if doing their accounts in Euros is putting pressure on the German supermarkets, while here in UK there is still local produce at local prices - until the devaluation of the pound feeds through.?0
