I have 2 kids, get the money paid into a post office account and draw out £25 a week which is used on whatever its needed for, bus fares, lunch money and any other expenses that come up during the week, whatevers left in the account is saved for christmas, gets some of my shopping in. So far I've got about £200 saved towards christmas :j

You shouldn't have to apologise for posting - you're the only one on here who knows this woman and the situation.

No she doesn't. She doesn't live with the ex and has no idea how the woman runs her finances. Like you, she sees the kids with no new clothes etc etc and jumps to conclusions that the money is not getting spent on the kids.

If that was the case then all children from broken relationships would be hungry, naked and living in cardboard boxes:confused:

I'm the one jumping to conclusions?!
I do know how their finances are run, they make no secret of arguing about it in front of us - how she spends all the money drinking and things for herself and anything bought for the kids comes from her new husband's pay packet. They fight about it everytime we see them.
I didn't pass comment on anyone else's situation, only my own - maybe you should do the same.

Ours just goes into the pot. Considering we're paying masses each month on childcare I don't think I'm cheating the boy out of what's his.
  • I have 3 kids and have always used the CB to contribute towards bills, clothes, school trips etc. However, when they were all born i took out policies for each of them which mature when they are 18. in fact my daughters policy matures on 2nd oct and she will then get £1800 which is all hers. They also all get £10 per week pocket money and we will buy their first cars (2nd hand) and insure, tax and mot them for the first year (did this for daughter £1800 all in - DH is driving instructor so nothing for lessons thank god!).
  • Ours also goes into the pot - but then we spend more than that now on music lessons, sports, swimming lessons etc. When they were little, some months it kept our heads above water, which I'm sure was more important for them at that time.

My mum used to save ours up at the PO and only cash in several weeks at a time - she bought our first dishwasher with some of it - which my sister and I definitely appreciated!

My little boy is nearly one and I opened up a savings account for him and every penny we ever received in child allowance has gone into the account for him.

We are very fortunate in that we have enough money coming in to cover all other expenses and that we are able to do this.

Although the fund is in my little boys name I have control over it which is important to me as:-

    1. I dont want the money to be a distraction for him when he is older, ie thinking that a sum of money means he wont have to pay extra attention to his education (young adults can be short sighted, well I was at that age). I also want to have input into what he spends it on. I will be flexible so long as it is NOT a motorbike or something illegal :rotfl:

    2. With the current climate, if we need to borrow the money we would be able to do so and pay it back at a later date.

For all those using thier child allowance for thier childrens upbrining, that it is what it is there for!!!!!!!! As I say, I am in a very fortunate position and hope that will continue, but nothing is certain in this day and age!
  • CB has always went into my child's account,I always hoped I would be able to save it all for her, however this was not to be.
It has only been possible to leave in £28 a month in the last year.
I leave in CB withdraw some about 3 times a year and she gets the £28 a month + any accrued interest.
I am currently saving it for her xmas.

I have always recieved it monthly and usally save it up for a cheap break away to visit family(this is our holiday),including days out while we are there.
Sometimes I haven't even been able to afford to save the money for the train fares to visit family and it has all gone on clothes for her.

My DD has never asked for it nor would she.

Any money DD has in her account is for driving lessons and a car, this has been discused and agreed, she is 13 and want's money for her xmas from everyone not gifts so she can save it for driving lessons ect.

What a thought provoking discussion, i was feeling guilty that my 2 children were not seeing any of it, then i added up how much each 4 weeks it costs for their music and sport classes and it comes to 63.00 more than i get in child benefit, so i can now say to them that actually they are recieving it and a lot more.
 grocery reduction planning now down to 50.00 per week
seriously on track to be debt free in 12 months.......
