I don't have a phone socket in the lounge. The installer fitted the box and left - I had to phone Sky because of a problem, which they addressed. They asked about the phone connection and I said it wasn't connected. They said it has to be connected. The engineers are coming back later today to have a look.
Genuinely, does a Sky + box need a permenant connection? 24/7?

Yes. its part of the terms and conditions. this is for a 12 month period then you can unplug it if you like. I think that they update things through the phone line to your Sky box. You can maybe get an extension from a nearby phone socket, thats what we had to do.
Hope you like your Sky plus. We have had it for years and its great to be able to pause, rewind etc.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Technically it doesn't need a phone line. software updates etc can be sent through the satellite dish.
As part of T&Cs they do require you to be connected for 12 months. If you have multi-room then both need to be connected permeanately, this is to prevent you and your neighbour joining Sky as one customer and splitting the cost!
We have one Sky+ box and only had it connected to the phone line in the old house, when we moved here there is no phone line in the room and no plans for one. When our box needed replacing they weren't bothered about there not being a phone-line.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. In simple NO....even though it says you do you don't....don't feel there going to come and take you away either if you don'tIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
Had Sky+ put in to replace existing Sky box, neither have ever been connected to a phone line in this house (the old Sky box had been at my last house).
Everything I want works, but then I never use the games or pay per view stuff so it may be that you need it for thesecomping since august 2007, wins so far.....none! :rotfl:0 -
I took my phone line out after the installers left, that was 10mths ago, never heard anything from them since.
It means that if anything goes wrong with the box & it starts to order box office movies via a malfunction my box cannot do it.( I have heard a lot of people disputing movies viewed with Sky) Also Sky cannot spy on me via telephone line.

Technically you do need it plugged it but as soon as the installer leaves you can unplug it from the phone line, the only time they check is when you have multiroom as you could use the 2nd box in another house , ive had Sky since it come out and various contracts and never had it plugged in.0

I suggest you only watch Sky TV from now on whilst wearing a tinfoil hat - and watch out for black helicopters circling overhead.I foolishly attached the Sky box into the phone line and with the OLD viewing card in it. This was traced by Sky who believed the connection was re-established and thus issued a bill.
Above quote from another thread.
Does this mean if he did not have the phone line connected he would not have been charged?
That is exactly what I was saying about spying if he had no phone line connected & just watched the free satellite channels he would have been ok.

It would have been for a pay per view channel,0
