Even if you should have it connected & you decide you will remove it & call sky to book any ppv then you will pay £1 booking fee per ppv each time you call them. So you may be spending more money then you need to as their is no booking fee if you book a ppv over the handset.
Sky do a callback to each box that you have so you get the offer of £10 for multiroom, if no callback id received then you eill be billed the full price on both boxes until this is resolved, the callbacks are completely free of charge.
The only fault i have heard of id thst the box may ring your house number & when you pick the phone up it will cut off & ring again as you may have a faulty modem in the box.
We had Sky installed 1 Oct 1998 and it hasn't been connected to the phone line since a few days after that.
There is no point for us whatsoever in having it connected, we don't waste money on PPV - have never bought any film or event and never will and we don't use any interactive that charges.
The only time having the box connected to the phone line is important is if you have multiroom and they need to check that both boxes are connected to the same phone line. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

The Sky engineer also confirmed this to me. The primary reasoning is for multiroom subscriptions and also to prevent you taking your box down the pub to watch the game on a sunday. Although he did also say you'd need it for purchasing additional PPV and viewing some interactive content.

Incorrect!!
Updates are via the satellite!
There is a high speed connection to everyone's satellite box - over the satellite, why would they use a phone connection which is slow and would cost them money, when they can simply broadcast to all boxes over the air?
Don't know why this myth of updates over the phone line comes from.
If you box has the wrong programme version in it & you are experiencing viewing probs then they will get you to check you version number & if its out ofdate then you will need to perform a forced download through the phone line.
This is FACT!You can't be lost if you don't know where you're going.0 -

That is NOT a fact.
Utter tripe.
Please refrain from posting incorrect information.
A forced download is still over the air.
NO updates of any kind are over the phoneline.
The phoneline is only for PPV and Interactive chargeable services. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... What a load of cobblers :rotfl:
A software update is sent via the dish not the phone line :rotfl:0 -
jackthenipper wrote: »WRONG!!!!
It's through a phone line, as not everyone needs a software update on a box. The Satellite dish only receives the signal for your box to decode so you can get viewing. Sky do not use satellite dishes for receiving/ broadcasting software updates. Do you work for Sky that you seem to think this is factual????
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Will you STOP posting incorrect information!
Sky DO use the satellites for updates.
NO updates are done via the phone line.
What you are posting is INCORRECT.
Stop posting INCORRECT information.
Different box updates are transmitted at different times, the box knows what software it is running, it just checks to see which version is currently being broadcast, if the broadcast version is newer than the box version then it is downloaded to the box. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... A Sky software update takes a maximum of 48hrs to come through a phone line.:p
STOP talking RUBBISH!
You have NO clue what the hell you are on about.
Stop being a troll.
1) ALL software updates come via the satellite.
2) Where are you getting 48 hours from? The time it takes to wake up Ch5 and Sky Three on a Viewing card if not used for a while? Well that's because the wake up / keep alive signals aren't sent that often over the air.
NO software update is done over the phone line.
The phone line is only for PPV and chargeable interactive. Not need for the free interactive.

Probably because he has done an update himself
Care to try and see if we are correct ?
Sky Receiver - How to force a software update.?
Customers often contact us when their Sky Receivers behave erratically.
Forcing an update of the system software will often clear a multitude of problems. Here's how:
1) Locate the button on the front of the Receiver, named "Back Up".
2) Press and hold down the "Back Up" button...
3) WHILE HOLDING IT DOWN, disconnect then reconnect the power to the receiver (do not release the back-up button yet).
4) About 20 seconds after reconnecting power, all four coloured lights will illuminate on the front of the receiver.
If the TV is switched to Sky a message will also appear on screen.. "Updating System Software".
5) Only after the four lights illuminate and the message appears should you release the back-up button.
6) After about 10 minutes the reciever will return to "standby" (ie. red LED only).
7. Leave the receiver in standby for 1 minute as it carries out a self check.
8). Switch receiver out of standby (green LED illuminates).
9) The receiver will take a few minutes "Searching For Listings".0 -

...because I know fully how the system works, whereas you do not and have just either being trying to guess or purposely posting incorrect info. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc...
