From what I understand the protection policies have got so many exclusions that they are not worth buying.

I have changed my mind and decided to come back to the debate.

Isn't the real reason for this to do with them saving money from customers who don't use the accounts often to cover their looses in the mortgage sector? Here is a Guardian article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/aug/04/hsbcholdingsbusiness.banking1

Yes of course it is. But isn't that the same with every business?

If a business decided to give all its 'partime' customers the same benefits as the fulltime ones, why would the full time ones want to stay? And what would convince the part time ones to become full times ones..

But, you are missing the point, would you believe, not everybody has £500 a month paid in, some have less, they will still use their account regularly, but with less facilities than they had before.

That in my book is treating them as second class customers.

Hmmm, banks are business enterprises, pretty much like airlines, an analogy that I think would be most appropriate.

IF you shell out the money, they would/should be treating you better. I fly cattle class (economy) but I never expect the level of service/food/legroom as those who fly first class. Simply because those who fly first class will invariably pay more.

So, yes, even though I could be a frequent flier and use the same airline company all the time, but if I pay for economy class, I get economy class!

Of course, if you feel ill treated, or the quality of service for what you're paying is not to your expectations, you can always choose NOT to fly with them!

    What's so different with banks?

Yes the comparsion with airlines is a good one as they both don't seem to operate in the real economy. Lending money to anything that moves and flying ghost planes.

Even my dead grandmother can get financial products from HSBC.

Just take a look at Northern Rock and the 125% mortgages, Household and the sub prime market in the States (Household is owned by HSBC) and of course self certifying mortgages.

Very true, we do do an executor's account. Might be worth a try.

I think that my mum and dad just got a nasty person (there are a few of them in that particular branch, in fact one of them said to me after the machine swallowed my card - we dont have ot give you another card you know, we can just keep the £1000 you have just paid in and refuse to allow you to withdraw it - 100% true, account wasnt overdrawn, faulty machine) who seemed to disregard the rules and think because they are retired they're only entitled to a BBA. Had they actually done the credit score (only done later) they would have seen their credit rating is perfect. They didnt have that problem anywhere else. Speaks volumes for HSBC...

That is terrible treatment. Did you complain? If there was genuinely no reason not to score them for a Current Account, they should have done - it says as much in our internal literature (to wit; if someone could qualify for a full CA, an application should be processed as such, however if they deliberately asked for a BBA they should be given one).

Personally, I think you just got an idiot that day. They exist in every walk of life, sadly...
