There is no high rate over the weekend. I try to get the bulk of my washing, drying and cooking for the freezer etc done then.

During the week my washing machine and dryer are on timers to come on during the night on cheap rate. Its a bit of a nuisance at first but you soon get used to it.

    hiya,

i have a NIE meter, im just wondering how you get onto powershift? do u just phone them up and ask, (can only ever get an answer machine, no matter what i call them for!!)

my metyer is running at £30 a week at the mo, only 3 of us in the house, but its becomng a bit of a toss up, whats cheaper to use in the long run, the immersion to heat the water, or stick the oil on for a while!

I just rang them and the girl changed it there and then over the phone. It doesn't kick in on your meter until the next time you top up though.

At the minute for 5 of us in a 3 bed semi its about £20 a week.

If you already have a prepay keypad meter then changing to Powershift is very easy and can be done over the phone and takes about 3 minutes

Hadn't actually thought about people who don't have a keypad meter and if it is available to them?

I suppose in theory it should be but would they need to send an engineer out to reset your electric meter?

You are absolutely right about the GMT, i made the same mistake until i read your post. Thankyou for that. I have fitted time clocks to Fridge freezer, Washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer. Not to the machines but to the sockets, preventing these from coming on until 12 midnight, the cheapest rate, 9. something pence, represents 38% cheaper electricity. Have now to change this to 1.00 am as I have been having just 12% discount. It is worth the efford to have all these heavy use things activated and running at the cheap rate.

I added an OWL electricity electricity monitoring unit from Argos, which allows programming of the 4 tarrifs and continiously displays the current amount of pence per hour being consumed. This was great to establish the unknown quantity and reduce it. For example in my home office with the pc off, i was using 2.2 pence per hour at off peak and 4 at peak. This was the printer and all the standbye transformers left plugged. Also I set the Owl to alarm if the cost per hour crosses 10p during peak, this alerts if I accidently switch on a high use item not thinking. Since the owl was fitted I now switch off the 2 office sockets so its zerouse, phones and things can recharge when I use the office.

I think I am the exception her with just a use of less than 50p per day, but as I get careless again this will increase to maybe double. My use before keypad, powershift and Owl was £40 PM, now £15. so I can afford to go to £25 and still pay back the timer switches and owl unit in 3 months, after that its all profit.

I am an energy professional in career and waht a stupid maistake i made in reference to GMT tarriffs, if I did this for a client id be sacked!!!! Spending the money on timers to make sure I bought more expensive electricity!! Thanks again for the information here

There is confusion here. These are 2 seperate keypad prepay products offered by NIE.
    1. Keypad STANDARD allows you to use electricity at one rate across 24 hours, currently this rate is 15.417 pence per KWh. This is a reduction of 2.5% on the credit account customer rate.

    2. Keypad POWERSHIFT allows use MONDAY TO FRIDAY as follows: WINTER TIME:

12.00 MIDNIGHT TO 8.00 AM 9.24 PENCE PER KWh
    8.00AM TO 4.00PM 13.857 PENCE PER KWh
4PM TO 7 PM 24.646 PENCE PER KWh
7PM TO 12.00 MIDNIGHT 13.857 PENCE PER KWh

    SATURDAY AND SUNDAY:
12.00 MIDNIGHT TO 8 AM 9.24 PENCE PER KWh
8.00 AM TO 7.00 PM 13.857 PENCE PER KWh
7.00PM TO MIDNIGHT 9.24 PENCE PER KWh

BRITISH SUMMERTIME SHIFTS ALL BANDS ONE HOUR FORWARD, IE MIDNIGHT BECOMES 1.00 AM AS SO ON. (THANKS TO EARLIER POST FOR THIS)

I WAS ASSURED BY NIE TODAY THAT THESE PRICES INCLUDE TAX AND ALSO ANY FUTURE RATE CHANGES WILL BE REFLECTED 0N A PRO RATA DISCOUNT BASIS FOR POWERSHIFT.

AS WE SPEAK THESE RATES COULD CHANGE BUT THE PROPORTION OF DISCOUNT AND EXCESS WILL REMAIN THE SAME.

If you have a STANDARD keypad plan you can change to powershift by phoning NIE and entering a code.

One gripe is: New customers have till 11.00 am to top up if credit runs out overnight, existing customers still have to race out and get credit before 9.00 am to maintain supply. Unless u can do on line in a hurry as u eat ur toast.
