Can I put oven tray on bottom of oven?

I have an electric fan oven (hotpoint) and have to cook lots in it tonight, I only have 2 shelves but can I put a roasting tin on the bottom or is this just asking for trouble??
Thanks

Erm I do it, but usually put the roast potatoes there or something that isn't too critical. I often swap the trays round too part way but no idea if you have to (used to cook with an ancient gas cooker).

I also nick the shelf from the grill oven to use an extra shelf (if things aren't too tall), so as to fit more in ;)

I have done it in my gas oven and it burned the food and the tray.

  • My fan oven only has 2 shelves too and I find it a bit of a pain. If you raise the tray off the bottom the air should circulate and cook whatever is on the tray evenly.
I have an old wire tray with legs from an old combi-microwave and put oven trays on that without any probs. or use a cooling rack raised up slightly (I'm thinking maybe a bowl/plate in the middle with the rack then tray on top). This will sit fine while cooking but can be a bit unstable when you go to move it so just be a bit more careful.

  • Thanks all, I just had another look at it and unfortunately don't think even with putting tray on bottom would be able to fit all in! (cooking roast lamb-takes up lots of space!)

I have a fan oven and find that if I put things on the bottom they burn. I've found that if I put a cake cooling thingy (what is the name of it??) on the bottom and the baking tray on that it stops the burning. I think it's because the air can circulate underneath. Hope this helps a little.

Probably best not to. How about cooking the lamb this afternoon (now?) and the veggies later. Then when the lamb is cooling before being carved, put the veggies back in to heat through? HTH. :)
  • Thanks-the lamb is a slow roast jobbie that will take 4 hours or so. Plan is-lamb on, with an hour or so to go add roasting tin with some duck fat, add spuds and some veg and just do the whole lot at the same time. when take lamb out to rest stick in crumble, should work fine :) (I hope!) will probably some boiled green beans with lashings of butter (!!) as well
The shelf on the bottom I think would work, its just that there is not enough space to fit all the roasting tins even if I did use the bottom. Hopefully will all fit, if not will use top oven
