All the above regarding eating them after the date and that test...it usually says Best Before not use by. I'm still here...

Fresher eggs may be better for some recipes and meals but for salads and sandwiches, they'll be fine...

Older eggs are actually better for hard boiling. And don't forget that you can then pickle them.

our eggs come from chickens in the garden, who sadly don't lay them with date stamps on :rotfl:

Seriously, the date is very recent, should be fine. If worried, do the water test mentioned above :)

Mine are April. As long as you cook them properly they'll be fine, trust me you'll know if they're bad as will the neighbours...

    Hello!

My partner works in agriculture, office based. His colleague is able to get him trays of 36 free range eggs for £1.50! Apparently they are from a local farm supplying the supermarkets, but the eggs aren't the right shape/sizes. We can't turn down protein that cheap, we usually pay £1.46 for 6 medium free range at Tesco!

He bought home a tray last week, a couple had cracks so they went in the bin. The rest were mainly HUGE ones! I'd like to buy these trays regularly.

The eggs aren't stamped, I don't know when they were laid.

Anyway, I was wondering if you OS-ers could give me some safety tips on unmarked eggs? I'd always just bought them from Tesco and eaten before use by date or a few days after so never really had to "think" and they were all very standard eggs!:o

How long are these eggs likely to be good for?
How do I know if they are not good?
I peeled a hard boiled egg today and it had a black spot on the egg white and inside the peeled shell it had grey splodges. Is this egg ok to eat? If it was a supermarket egg I probably wouldn't have even noticed!
The eggs also seem to crack more easily than usual in boiling water..?

I know these questions might sound silly but I'm clueless and need to learn!

    Thanks :) xxx

I do this also and it is a good, easy, way of telling the state of an egg.

If you are unsure about the eggs provenance I would suggest that you cook them thoroughly. I believe all supermarket eggs are stated as salmonella free but these eggs may not be. Cooking them properly will destroy any salmonella

Yes, eggs last for a month or so but quality deteriorates after a few days. As Al1x says, if it floats then ditch it as it's too old. Apparently eggs crack when boiling if they're a bit old.

  • We sell our own eggs and we've been advised that a month is acceptable. I've also worked on an egg farm, I bet your getting yours fresher than in the shop. They would only come to get eggs every few days and then they go off to be packed then shipped to the stores. We took the mishapes everyday. You'll probably have loads of double yolkers!!
