no but I have the same problem...my laptop has a hd dvd player which will play every day dvd's but not hd ones although in the box it says this dvd might have been made after the player so find some firmware or some other software to play it with...but there is none...

Sounds like you need some HD playback software, like Cyberlink Power DVD.

I don't know of any freeware applications that do this at present.

PCs which have HD-DVD drives often don't come pre-installed with HD player software, only DVD player software, requiring you to upgrade to the full version for HD playback.

If you have Vista, apparently in a few months time MS will release an update which will play HD DVDs directly from the system..

If the HD-DVD films starts playing with WMP first then close WMP when it does, right click the HD_DVD drive then choose Powerproducer to open up the disc.

its not giving me that option...media centre and thats it...
but inside the disc box it says
tells you to go to www.hddvdeurope.com
or to go to toshiba and get the latest firmware or software up-date...

Nice one Microsoft; wait until a format becomes obsolete, and then release drivers for it.

What's next, Windows Betamax edition? :p

I actually thought VHS was out of fashion now...I mean can you still buy the blank tape's...I have a video but only to watch old vid's on...as we also have a multi-region dvd payer...cos the dvd player is replacing the video...

anyway getting back to the lappy...

I can't see why it wont play the hd dvd's...I only have 3 the first 3 harry potter movies they didn't cost much £3.49 each so no real harm it'll play normal dvd's though...weird...
    :D
