Spider deterrent in the garden (merged)
Hi All,
I know you aren't meant to kill spiders but at the moment garden spiders are taking over my garden and I can't go out there because I am phobic. I really need some way of getting rid of them please? Will fly spray kill them? Or is there something i can plant that will send them on their merry way? I only have a tiny garden but really want to be able to take by young DS out there
The spiders rule my garden and I hardly think thats fair!!

Awwwww poor spiders. They are amazing creatures.
It might help your phobia if you could teach DS all about them and try and watch one of them working for a while. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

Well the Spiders will kill all sorts of pests and flies for you, but if you really need to be rid of them then throw bird food or bread out late in the evening, and at first light your garden will fill with hungry birds who will eat the food and the spiders too. You will have to do this for a few days.
It will at least rid you of the most but leave some to do their good work outside. Once October is out of the way the Spiders will have gone anyway. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
Thank you Norbertsmum, oh how I wish it was that easy.Norbertsmum wrote: »Awwwww poor spiders. They are amazing creatures.

I know they are amazing but, i'm afraid, doesn't help my phobia about them! I can stand and look at one and watch it and ratioanlise that my fear is irrational (stupid, dumb, pointless, unfounded, pathetic for those who aren't phobic and have absolutely no idea what it is to have a level of phobia about something) That much I have been able to train myself to do! Unfortunately, I have a very small garden and they are able to spin webs the width of it meaning I actually can't get out into my garden at all. If I had a big garden I would let them rule the roost and I would go elsewhere in the garden.
The bird idea is a great one and i'll try it, thank you. Unfortunately I don't have any time off in October and the weather isn't likely to be as nice as it is now so although I would love to let the amazing spiders dictate my use of my garden, I am a little reluctant to.
Thanks for responses, anyone else got any ideas to help with the spiders (not my phobia, I am quite happy dealing whth that at the speed I already am!)

You cannot keep spiders out of your garden, you just can't.
As someone who does have phobias, I'm not going to talk down to you, but I would move at a faster pace than you are doing.
Do not throw bird food/bread into your garden at night, it will attract vermin, especially if you "do it for a few days".
You need to get a bigger garden, or get used to them, they are not ruling your garden, you are letting them rule you......... and you and your DS's lives are suffering because of it.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Personally I would get someone to teach your DS to pick up the spiders and move them.
That way when you go into the garden with your DS, he will move them for you.
Even very young kids are good at picking small creatures up if someone teaches them how to handle them.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

No helpful advice but I too suffer from the same phobia so I really feel for you.
In my garden there's a really big spider that has made it's web between 2 pot plants on the patio - I can consequently now only use half the patio
You'll never get rid of them I'm afraid - I won't tell you to get over it as I know you can't! _pale_0 -
If I only had 1 or 2 spiders, I would move them or kill them. The garden is infested, phobia or not. If I had wanted judging about my phobias I would have asked. I didn't. Me and my DS's lives are not "suffering" thank you very much! And I don't wish to discuss it any further.
I really wish I would learn my lesson about coming here to ask for advice and disclosing that my life isn't absolutely perfect. Forget I even asked.

and when I say infested I mean I counted about 20 x 1cm spiders in large webs in about a sq metre and thats standard all around the garden.Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

You need to learn not to take everything that people post on the internet personally. No one is attacking you because you have a phobia about spiders, they are merely pointing out that you can't do anything about them without causing further problems so your choices are to tackle your phobia or get someone to remove them for you.
I am often rung up to remove spiders from my friends' places.
The funniest for me was when I was sharing a house at university and heard this scream. I found out it was from one of the guys who was really big. He was scared of spiders and I had to remove it from his room for him.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

You know I typed out a great long response and then realised it's just not worth it. You clearly don't have a phobia about spiders Olly. I think you have said it all when you say that your funniest moment was rescuing a big burly man from an incy teeny spider....your empathy abounds.
returning to the topic of the thread...
I asked for advice about getting rid of spiders (reducing thieir numbers would do!) so if anyone has any advice about reducing their numbers or getting rid of them, i'd be interested to hear from you.Good Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!
