 I think you're looking at this from the wrong perspective. Garden spiders live in the garden - it's in the job description. ;) You'll never get rid of them, and IMHO, you shouldn't be trying.

I think the title of your post should be: "How can I overcome my phobia?" There are various methods of treatment, which usually work along the lines of increased exposure, starting with pictures etc. and building up to (probably) holding a tarantula. Have you considered any such option? In the long run, overcoming your phobia would prove far more worthwhile than a lifelong losing battle against our 8-legged friends. :)
Forget it, she hasn't got a problem, certainly doesn't want you to say she has.

All she wants to do, is know how to kill spiders. Of course, she will then likely complain about the number of flies in the garden, whats an ecosystem again?

Try re-reading her first post, she did not say she just wanted to kill them. She also asked if there was a deterrent. Can you honestly say you have never disrupted an ecosystem of any sort? Seriously? Watch you don't come toppling off that soapbox there, you might damage your own ego.

ETA, suggesting ways she can deal with her phobia and how it might help are fine. But do you all really expect her to pay attention to those suggestions if you are rude and sarcastic about it? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

I have. Your original suggestion would have done her more good had you left it at that. The gentler suggestions about dealing with her phobia would have been filed away in the back of her mind for whatever point in the future she might have felt ready to deal with it. Instead you lost your temper, were rude and negated any value in that post because she will now completely disregard anything you say.

I didn't offer any advice for dealing with her phobia at all. I just suggested it was the right way to go, rather than trying to get rid (dead or otherwise) of the spiders, because you can't.

I didn't lose my temper, I just called her stupid. Which she is being about this. You stick with your airyfairy "everything will be alright dear" attitude and I'll stick with the facts thanks.

Wow you really are an unpleasant person. I hope that bites you in the bum one day. I am out of this thread. Good luck whatever you decide to do OP.

It's the time of year when spiders are at their greatest number and busy feeding themselves up.

Apart from encouraging birds one thing you can do is keep your garden neat and tidy, reducing the number of places for them to shelter in, probably best done in the winter though when you have a phobia.

Would you all mind not talking about me over my head?!? (thanks though Aylana for fighting my corner while I was gone!)

I said I had a phobia in my OP so I really don't know where you are getting the idea that I don't want anyone to say I have a problem...very strange.

My post title should not be: "How can I overcome my phobia?" (but I will consult you next time to ensure I am getting it right) because thats not what I want advice about. I am a psychiatric nurse so I am well aware of exposure therapy and how it works and have partaken in it over the years to get me to the stage I am at currently. I can live with it, it doesn't affect my life on a day to day basis and I can get rid of one if it comes into the house (yes I KILL them - the karma will get me one day...or maybe the plague of flies that hasn't yet decended on me...). I am not allowing this to ruin my life or my sons. We are not recluses, pale and wan, indoors like a pair of veal calves who have never seen the light of day.

We (shock horror) get exercise and do lots of running around, looking at plants and creatures in the park which is a short walk away but is not afflicted with a plague of spiders (must ask the keeper what they use to obliterate the vile beasts next time I see him. Hopefully bleach or an AK-47, maybe I can borrow it?). I just want to be able to use our garden too...

TBH I smell TROLL wind up so I shan't continue defending myself. Have fun.

My huge husband is TERRIFIED of spiders, even the smallest one. A fear passed over from his mother. PLEASE don't pass your fear on to your child. Learned behaviour can be such a bane for all concerned.
  • Ha the oH's sister won't cross the thresh hold at the minute! There's a HUGE garden spider above the front door! Web like cotton!

I say just leave it as it eats all the nasties!

Just train someone to move it, although it'll probably go back to where it was ;)
