Urgent Help Needed Child/working Tax

Options
Good morning all,

I do hope that someone will be able to offer me some much needed advice this morning!

My partner tends to deal with the child/working tax people but we have receive some bad news this morning and as a result she was wondered off slamming the door behind her - I will therefore attempt to tell you of our woe in the hope that some kind soul will offer advice.

Here goes.......

We currently receive working tax and child tax credits. Up until a month ago my other half worked part time (16 hrs wk) but has since gone full time, as a result we have put our daughter in full time childcare. On top of this, I now work for the same company as she does, leaving my previous employer meant receiving considerably less income per month in terms of my contribution to the household (the move was forced).

We informed child/working tax of the changes, i.e. my other half going full time. Before making the decision of whether it was benefitial for her to go full time we asked for a estimation of future tax benefits. We were informed that we would receive some extra which would be swollowed by the extra childcare costs. She wanted to get back to full time so she informed tax credits that she was starting full time the following week. No problems.

I was informed by my previous employer that in future months that work would dry up and redundancies were expected. As i had not worked there long I decided to jump ship and find alternative work. As I mentioned I now work at the same company as my partner, we informed tax people. No problem......

.........PROBLEM!!!!

My partner telephoned them today as she was confused that DD payment was short. We have been informed that we will recieve £500 less!!!! than what we were informed of during the estimation.

HOW CAN THIS BE WITH EVERYTHING TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT?

I.E LOWER HOUSEHOLD INCOME AND INCREASED CHILDCAERE COSTS?

Needless to say we cannot afford to lose this money. We have made big decision based on the information tax credits gave us.

how can this be resolved? I will try post more detialed accounts when my distraught and estranged partner returns.

many thanks.

So that's £500 less over a year or £10 a week or if they're going to recover it between now and April, £20 a week. That should be easily recoverable in other ways such as cutting back on living expenses, getting better deals on gas/electric/internet etc and the boards on here should be able to help. If you smoke, you can recover that in no time simply by quitting.

Count yourself lucky. We've lost £120 a month since last month.

Do you have both of your incomes paid into one account or do you each have your own accounts and pay certain bills each? Just asking because couples who do the latter seem to always end up in grief on these boards.

You earn less. Therefore your household income is reduced. Where's the confusion? You took a lower paying job. Credits are closer to a flat-rate bonus for working rather than a way to bump everyone up to a minimum income. If you work 30 hours a week you receive £xy00 per year. If you work 30 hours a week but are paid £10K less then you still only receive around £xy00 - you aren't given £10,000 + £xy00.

i understand this, but we are receiving £500 less a month than before we changed status.

shouldnt it just maintain the income we receive with a shortfall on my wage?

Problem is without the figures we cant really tell you if this is right or explain fully to you. I suggest that you have a look at entitledto.com and play with the figures. Also something else that can catch you out is the fact that your wages are now lower BUT your already 5 months into the tax year so your income will be based on how much has been earned already. PLUS your OH is now working full time bringing in a full time wage.

How much are you earning both earning now as opposed to before the change ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

CHUFFING HELL. I know £100 a month is a problem for a lot of people so never considered £500 a month.

As implied, it depends on what the joint income is.

Has your wife's extra income made up somewhat for the drop in your income?

Or have you had a significant drop in income?

Because if the drop is big then the amount you have earned up until now this year will be included in your annual estimate for this year iyswim.

If you can hold out until april then you should get more from then on, if that is the case.

Like said, have you put some figures into entitledto and checked it out. Also (sorry for stating the obvious!), have you checked they have all the details correct on the award?

It really will help people answer if you can give figures.

As an aside, it's a good job both of you don't deal with things by storming off isn't it?
