giving address for refund?

Postcode surveys are normally for the customer's benefit. It shows where customers are travelling from and could lead to a store being built near you. There is nothing sinister about it and what does the postcode actually give away about you ?0

I agree that you some of our details should remain confidential, if you use a debit card instore, the receipt that they put in the till has your full debit card number on it, the copy you are given has only the last 4 digits. They have your name, if you give them your address what's left?
Your postcode and door number is the full address!
What shop does that? I've never seen one that has the full card number on it.0 -

Most, if not all. Why would you see the copy of the card receipt that was going in the till? Every shop that I've worked in had the full card number on the shops copy of the receipt and the last four only on the customers.0 -
I have never thought twice about giving whatever details I'm asked when requesting refunds - I am usually just grateful to be given the refund and get on my merry way.
I will say that when applying for "freebies" I have in the past given the wrong details - I.e. my correct address and correct name but with added tweaks / extra letters or msispellings then when I get junk with those details, I know who it originated from / who sold my details on. I did this very recently when applying for some free sweetners - no junk post yet for my cat .....0 -

None of the shops I've worked in do. The Ryman branch I worked in blanked out the details, and where I work, the card numbers (except for the final four) are starred out. I assumed that was a legal requirement now.0 -

Every single time you pay by debit card there are two receipts printed, you get the one with the numbers crossed out, the company keeps the one with the full number on it and they put it in the till. At the end of the shift these are put into a safe, at the end of the week they are put into a box or a bag and kept in the building for, I believe 2 years.
Next time you use your debit card ask the cashier to show you their copy. also bear in mind that if the cashier notes your pin they have enough details to key in your details and steal your money!0 -

Is this smaller shops though? Like I said, the ones where I've worked, blank out the card numbers. The copies of the recipt ryman had were identical (the tillroll was carbon paper, so it simply printed twice) and where I work now, there is only one copy of the receipt and all the other data is stored electronically.
I always cover my PIN anyway, though.0 -

The shop I work out does not print out a retailer copy. Just one card receipt which the customer gets.0 -
It's rare these days if the merchant copy of the receipt has your full card number on, there's no reason for the information to be held, there's also no reason to keep the paper copies of the receipts for two years.
What would be the point of putting them in a safe for a week if your only going to move them to somewhere less secure after this?0 -
I have refused to provide my details on returning a faulty item for a refund. an hour later was wishing that I didnt stand on principle. It was an electrical retailer and I had paid cash for the item, took the item (which didnt work) and the reciept - I had bought it the day before - plugged it in and NOTHING! had one of those sealed plugs so had to take it back. Everything fine until they asked for my name, address and postcode!
then it went like this
Sales Person - Can I have your name address and postcode madam
(btw - dont call me madam - I dont run a brothel)
Me - What for?
SP - for our records
Me - Why?
(at this point DH slinks away pretending interest in the TVs)
SP - because I need to know for our records.
Me - Why?
SP (exasperated), because its our procedure madam.
Me - I just want my refund, and I dont see why you need my name address and postcode.
SP - calls in reinforcements - another member of staff -this takes about ten minutes as they are all busy.
Other Sales Person - we cannot give you a refund until we have your name address and postcode.
Me - Why not?
OSP - because of fraud madam.
Me - I have the item, I have the reciept, I paid cash and if I remember rightly - YOU served me yesterday. Now can I have my refund please?
SP - No, we need your details
Me -(Losing it a bit) - Well you cant bloody have them - now I want my money back!
Sales Persons confer for a few minutes and decide to call in a HigherAuthority.
DH sees its gonna get embarrassing and decides to wait in the car!
thirty minutes later the manager (Higher Authority diegns to arrive).
HA - we really need your details for our records madam
Me - You arent getting them - Now my refund please!
HA - If you paid by credit or debit card then we have to have the details
Me - I paid cash and I want it back.
HA - Er, cash???
Me- Yes
HA - Okay, (presses a key on the till and proceeds to refund me).
Ha - Thank you madam.
Me - Dont bloody well call me madam!0
