Help with cooking a goose please!

The other day, in Lidl, we saw frozen geese for sale. I thought it would make a nice change for Christmas dinner but wasn't sure. So I bought one to do a trial run. I cooked it yesterday and because I expected it to taste a bit like turkey I did the usual turkey stuffing, veg, gravy etc. I was quite suprised by how beefy the goose tasted. It was delicious and very tender, but the other things I had cooked with it were too bland for the meaty taste.
What should I cook to eat with it? Please will you advise me on a Christmas dinner menu.Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in.0 -

Hi CS :hello: - strange to see you not at catties
Luuuuurrrrvvve goose. We've had it for the last couple of years, though we tend to just have your normal veggies with it (Roasties, roast or mashed squash, broccoli. Cumberland sauce goes quite well with it as does a nice cranberry and orange stuffing or a mushroom and garlic one (or both)
How much was it in Lidl? I've been looking in Tesco but they haven't got any in yet....:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
We have goose at Christmas. The traditional accompaniments are apple sauce and sage and onion stuffing. I'm going to serve quince sauce this year as I have an abundance of quinces. Anything fruity would be a good complement to the rich meat, which as you say is not at all like turkey.
Another thing to do is stuff the goose with mashed potatoes. They are supposed to absorb all the fat. Don't forget to save the fat for roasting your spuds. It keeps almost indefinitely in the fridge.

They're expensive, but soooo worth it:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
I get my geese via my butcher from here

If you think Lidl's are expensive don't even contemplate buying one here :rotfl: They are fabulous though, and it's only once a year0 -
I think it was about £13 for a full goose and about £6 for a double breast (is that called a crown?) in Lidl. The roast potatoes cooked in the fat were delicious. I made the gravy with chicken stock though. I wouldn't do that again, it was too bland for the meaty taste. I'm going to boil up the bones from this goose and make goose stock for next time.Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in.0

I saw them on saturday - i think they were 12.99 which is very cheap for a goose.
I waited last year and went to sainsbury's on xmas eve and bought reduced free range and organic turkeys and geese and froze them.
the reductions were huge - I got a goose reduced to £15 from £40.
turkeys form 5 -10 according to the sizes.
we have enjoyed eating them for special occasions throughout the year.
WIll be going for geese atgain this year - superb.
