tesco BB speed

i am currently on tesco BB at 512kbps, they promised 1mb speed in the summer. i emailed them and they said it should be increased over by end sept.
now end of nov and still on a lowly 512.
i read on another thread that 1meg was to have download limits, does anyone know if this apply to only new customers and when are they planning on upgrading us existing customers?

to be honest the speed is not the problem for normal i-net use as i only download video/music occassionally but when you see others on 8meg (bulldog) i realise that 2hr film may get downloaded in 7-8hrs rather than 2-3 days.

i am tied until 2006, is it worth while making a fuss and trying to change my ISP?

"i realise that 2hr film may get downloaded in 7-8hrs rather than 2-3 days."

What are you using to download the film?
You should really be getting a 2 hour film quicker than that even at 512kbps.
  • Tesco 1mb has got a monthly download limit of 3GB. If you regularly download music and films you will go well over this limit. I am also on the 512 uncapped service and have just been informed my line is capable of 1mb but after having a look around the other providers I am sticking with 512 uncapped as all the other uncapped services appear to be in excess of £20 month.

UK online is the only cheap provider but having read adsl guide forums, new customers are getting a very mixed service - some waiting weeks for connection.

(Tesco will no provide you with a mac code to change as they are a data stream provider, not an ip stream provider. This means you will need to cancel your contract first and then find a new provider if you wish to change to anyone else)

mainly using a p2p programme i cannot mention so download ulitmately relies on the other connection staying up.

i have never had a constant connection through a reliable source

  • If the connection is so unstable the an upgrade in speed is not necessarily going to help as much as you might think.

This is nothing to do with your isp. This is just your P2P connection. The alternative is to find the same file on a different P2P site. You could try bittorrent or alternatively Edonkey/Emule is a good reliable P2P with plenty of files. Are you sure your firewall settings are correct as some firewalls automatically block ports that P2P software uses.

I wouldn't reccomend turning your firewall off to download but you could always try turning it off for a short period whilst you see if you get a reliable connection. If you get a connection with your firewall turned off you would then need to alter the settings to allow traffic through the ports that the P2P program uses.
  • there is no problem with the connection dropping or over use of bandwidth, its just people who have the files to share log off and on so i go to the back of the queue.
i would ideally like to link my comp to another and download a film without any interuption just to see how long it would actually take.
i edonkey and have tried bit torrent but it's awfy complicated

Ok.... Tesco Broadband and the magic 1 Meg....

Basically when Tesco launched they're 512k unmetered it was a good deal, one of the best. The market very rapidly changed though, so they cut the price to £17.97. It still wasn't enough, and they've been planning upgrades for ages now but have faced delays. They finally got out the 1 Meg in September, but with a 3 Gig limit, same price as 512 unmetered, existing users can upgrade to the 1 Meg (although will be subject to a new 12 month contract).

    What they actually plan is:

    - Reduce the price of 512k again bringing into the "Value" range (existing customers will also benefit)
    - Keep £17.97 1 Meg with 3 Gig limit
    - Introduce uncapped 1 Meg for a slightly higher price
    - Introduce 2 Meg (a fair way off yet)

I did hear the end of November for the uncapped 1 Meg and 512 price drop, but that was a while ago. Perhaps due to the delays they have changed their plan again? I'm not sure.

My advice would be stick with it until your 12 months is up. The market is fast changing and there are (and will be) better deals around.
  • fantastic...do you work for tesco by anychance????
any idea of the expected price for 1g uncapped?

A rough guide to speeds you can get on bittorrent with a 512 connection anything around 50 Kbps is good you can double that for 1 meg - but if your not set up right, as others have said you wont see anywhere near those speeds - i know from experience,it used to take me days to get a big file now my ports are set right they are flying down.

it also depends on the user who is uploading to you remember, they might not have broadband, or are uploading to multiple sources at the same time
