MG ZR using a lot of oil

Oh for goodness sake - it is a hell of alot cheaper to put in a secondhand engine rather than rebuild the existing one.
But noticed that the OP said that the car was not yet 3 years old? If so, it would be under warranty.Genie

It is an MG Rover so the warranty went down the pan with the company.0

No warranty.
It's not leaking oil from what I can gather, it's burning it or something.
To be honest we've just about had enough of it and are gonna trade it in for something else. It's not smoking or anything yet so hopefully will get 1/2 decent valuation on it.
I've had a HGF on a previous Rover and I got that sorted, head skimmed etc...but this isn't the same problem so didn't really know what to do.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 19017/05/08 - Total on DMP: £10025.7007/05/14 - Total on DMP: £1666.20 DFD: July 2017!!Baby Tomos born 5th June 2009 - 6lb 5oz :jWeight Loss Target - to lose 60.8lb by NYE 2015 - 37.6lb TO GO0 -

just want to get this thread up as i was searching for MGzr head gasket problems. i'm going to look at a car mg zr 1.4 this afternoon to buy as a cheap round around and now i'm a little concerned with the reports on the net that the head gasket goes and you are looking at £500.00 for repair (cars only worth 2k) I know there are good and bad points about all cars but I dont know now whether its a reliable car to get.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0

the high oil consumption will be caused by one of the following faults (or rarely, by several faults in combination).
1) worn valve stem oil seals
2) worn oil control rings
3) damaged cylinder bore
worn oil control rings will not normally be highlighted on a standard compression test, since the primary purpose of the OC piston rings is to stop oil getting into the combusion chamber. The OC rings do not maintain cylinder pressure and when the OC rings fail, the pressure remains largely unchanged.
you could perform a more specialist test called a cylinder leakdown test by inserting compressed air through each of the sparkplug holes. it should show clearly whether the stem seals are allowing oil to leak in.
i would want to be a bit surer that the fault was very costly to remedy before giving up on the car.. even through they are rover, those are nice cars, at least to look at!
edit: i just checked google images, and i was thinking of the wrong car.. the mg zr is indeed pig-ugly. i was confusing it with the mg tf......0 -
