MG ZR using a lot of oil

They just said that it's burning way too much oil and can't be sure exactly what the cause is. I'm contemplating talking my boyfriend into trading it in for something else.
I know it's not very ethical but there can't be any come back on us if we trade it in somewhere and don't mention that there's a problem with it can there?
well thats not much of an answer from a garage , id expect them to give a reason such as "your xyz is worn out and cannot be replaced" hence the new engine
i think maybe trading it in for something better would be worth thinking about, must be alot of desperate salesmen around at the moment0 -

They said that the cost of diagnosing it could turn out to be mega bucks and by the time they find out what it is and replace it, it would have been cheaper to put a whole new block in.
I'm having a browse on autotrader now, just not sure how much I'll be given for it (not gonna mention the engine obviously)DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 19017/05/08 - Total on DMP: £10025.7007/05/14 - Total on DMP: £1666.20 DFD: July 2017!!Baby Tomos born 5th June 2009 - 6lb 5oz :jWeight Loss Target - to lose 60.8lb by NYE 2015 - 37.6lb TO GO0 -
A new block is not necessarily a new engine?:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. But I doubt if a garage would change a block as the total cost would probably be close to a replacement engine, or perhaps they meant short engine, but with high oil consumption that would not be very wise.0

They said it needs a new engine, they said I'd be better off replacing it with a 2nd hand/recon engine, they would do the labour for me.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 19017/05/08 - Total on DMP: £10025.7007/05/14 - Total on DMP: £1666.20 DFD: July 2017!!Baby Tomos born 5th June 2009 - 6lb 5oz :jWeight Loss Target - to lose 60.8lb by NYE 2015 - 37.6lb TO GO0

"Why" does it need a new engine. Have they given any idea as to the cause. Low compression in a cylinder, oil in one of the cylinders, one or more plugs fouled ? Seems a bit dodgy if they cannot give a simple answer.0

They said by the time they've found out what it is it would have been cheaper to just replace the engine. They came to that conclusion after doing a compression test.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 19017/05/08 - Total on DMP: £10025.7007/05/14 - Total on DMP: £1666.20 DFD: July 2017!!Baby Tomos born 5th June 2009 - 6lb 5oz :jWeight Loss Target - to lose 60.8lb by NYE 2015 - 37.6lb TO GO0

So they are saying that it would cost you more than (im guessing) 2k to fix, so you're better off getting a new engine??? It smacks of either laziness to diagnose, they're trying to rip you off for a bunch of work that's easy but costly, or to try and get rid of you with a big quote! You cant really come to that conclusion after just a compression test!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. What?? A new engine are these guys serious?
When my head-gasket blew on my engine the coolant went into the oil and made a right mess of the engine. It was seriously bad. The guys at my local garage stripped the engine down. Flushed it and fitted a new gasket. Less than a month later the car was on the track at Silverstone.
In comparison your engine is using a bit of oil. It should be a case of check for leaks and see which bit it leaking. I might be the gasket on the rocker cover.
In the meantime there are plenty of experts on here: http://forums.mg-rover.org Theres a section for ZRs.
I'm sorry to say but the garage you took it to sound utterly useless and don't fret about HGF just enjoy the car.0
