Cheap MOTs: Nottingham, Derby and East Midlands

  • PLEASE bear in mind that Mr Clutch charge such a minimum for their MOTs there has to be a catch!!
I am not pleased to report that I was sucked in after reading on here how good they were. HOWEVER!! I took my little fiesta in last Saturday (and overheard one of the guys chatting with his mate on the phone about how quiet they were during the week - my alarm bells were ringing but it was a bit late by then!). My car failed on loads of things, one of which was (if you are technically minded!) rear axel rubber bushes which they said were horrible to fit and would cost about £200 (£65 a hour labour - nice work if you can get it!!).
Thankfully I decided to see if I could get this bit done elsewhere and after loads of quotes the cheapest was £140.
THEN I was lucky enough to call another garage who said it was strange they needed doing and perhaps the garage had been 'over-cautious' with the MOT. Took it in there and they said they wouldn't do this job to pass it. That yes they were deteriorated but they would basically outlive the car!! Have just got EVERYTHING else that neeed doing done plus another MOT for £135. Yes the MOT was £45 rather than £20, but infact I have just wasted £20 and a trip to Derby (I live in Notts).
DO NOT GO TO MR CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone ever had a cheap MOT done and got their car passed WITHOUT any further work needing doing?

The standard fee is £53-10,if the garage does it for £25 and it passes then the garage will be down £28-10.

Seems there`s no such thing as a cheap MOT.
Maybe it`s just a gimmick to lure people in and then rip them off big time.

I always take my cars to the cheapest possible - usually MR CLUTCH online booking for £20.00 and all my cars always pass. They are:- 2007 Mercedes / 2004 MG ZR / 1970 MGB / 1974 MGB V8 I check that all lights are working, wipers & washers OK, good handbrake and reasonable tyres. Nothing special, just commonsense.
If your car cannot pass this you should not be driving it! GG

I strongly recommend Mr. Clutch in Derby. Have never had an MOT failure there and their price is the lowest in town. See my earlier posting about 4 MOT passes. If your car really needed rubber bushes, I suggest you buy them and fit them yourself for about £30 not any of the quotes you had. GG

Just to say, have just been to the Council MOT centre at London Road, Nottingham. Big thumbs up from me - I waited while my car was MOT'd, lovely staff, all of them, very friendly and professional. I will definitely be using them again next year.

Took my car to MR CLUTCH on Thursday and it passed with no advisories. There IS such a thing as a cheap MOT providing you make some commonsense checks first and that your car is roadworthy. My 4th MOT at MR CLUTCH, Derby. They all passed, I have no connection with the company and they don't know me.

The staff there explained that when a car does need repairs they try to quote the max and min prices, but customers seem to mis-interpret such advice after the event and when they are sat in front of a computer!

East and West Lindsey in Lincs don't have test centres.
Lincoln City have one at Stamp End and the number is 01522 533488
  • I have never been able to fault Nationwide in Derby, especially when they were on Traffic Street. They have moved to London Road recently so not sure if the same staff are there. I took a 15 year old Volvo there for 4 years and the only advisory I ever got was for faded indicator bulbs, they use the orange bulbs behind clear lenses. With AA membership and special offers you can often save 33%
My names not Bill but I am from Beverley
  • I used to take my car for MOT at the Council Centre in Arnold for years. Now though, i take it to the Motmax co uk site in Carlton. Motmax only do mot's but unlike the council, they don't charge the full VOSA fee and always have special deals, they don't charge for retests either but best of all, if the car is under ten years old they don't charge you at all if your car fails, and the fee is only payable if/when the car passes. Their webiste has all thier current offers and they have branches throughout Notts & Lincs.:money:
  • Bassetlaw District Council use their depot at Carlton Forest - where A1 housing is also based, and is also open to the public. Have no number tho, sorry
