The Sender didn't pay full postage

Hi,

I've just received a card through my door stating that 'the sender didn't pay full postage'. I'm sure this is an Ebay item I have been waiting a week for. Now, I would like to collect the item to obviously confirm this, but I'm not sure what my rights are.

If this is the Ebay item (I'm pretty sure it is), there is a £1.27 payment to be had on the item, which seems minimal - but hey, I've already paid for postage.. I don't want to pay extra.

Shall I collect the item and then contact the seller and ask for a refund of £1.27? Has anyone else encountered this before? What are my rights?

  • I would get a receipt when you collect, make a scan of the packaging showing the underpayment, and email the seller nicely to explain and ask to have this refunded. You can send the evidence later if necessary.

It's only 27p they were short... the £1 is the penalty charge!

Thanks for the advice - by 'underpayment', would you include the £1 penalty charge?
  • I would just say that you've had to pay a fee of £1.27 to collect your item. I wouldn't go into details about what the £1 is for, just give the overall amount. You've had to pay it, so you're with your rights to ask to have it refunded.

I'd message the seller and ask for £1.50. That's to cover the charge, plus any chunk Paypal take from their payment to you.

  • If they do it as a partial refund, there won't be any fees to pay.

As a sender we have had this happen to us in the past. Lickable stamps don't stick very well to poly bags :D

Politely e-mail the sender and explain you have a charge to pay and would like to know what they wish todo to rectify the situation.
I don't think you could force them to pay if they got shirty but you could reflect that in your feedback.....don't threaten bad feedback though as the threat could get the comment removed.

  • ask them to scan the cert of posting so you can see it that should show how much postage they paid for your item, then you can work out if they paid full postage or not :)

It's immaterial what they paid originally that's between the seller and the PO. The buyer is out of pocket and a good seller will refund without delay and then worry about a claim to the Royal mail.

I had a terrible time earlier this year, a new work contract meant I couldn't use a PO for many of my goods and I used to go to the sorting office either first thing at 7am or last thing at night. They would mark all the packages with the postage due, charge me, give me a receipt and then put them aside to be stamped later. Unfortunately they never got stamped and went into the stysem and all turned up with money to pay. I spent a few happy days refunding buyers right left and centre and then did a batch of claims to the RM and got back a full book of 1st class stamps for all the samller claims and a cheque for the claims that totalled over £4.

All my buyers gave me excellent feedback for dealing with the matter so quickly.

All that for the sake of £1.27  personally I like to think buyers are not that unhelpful, luckily all mine were very understanding. It is likely to get worse as well with many POs saying they can no longer issue labels for standard letters or large letters and for me using plastic mailers that is a real problem as the stamps just slide off.

Collect the goods and then ask seller to refund the excess.
