To be honest I would think if the OP wants a small, economical, nippy car the best thing would be to get a decent old 205 GTi, they weigh next to nothing so if you drive them gently it will be economical, theyr'e quick enough when you want and they won't lose anything as they're already starting to be considered a classic.
Oh no see, that would be my other suggestion too.
Smart Roadster or Pug 205GTI, your life will never be the same again. It'll be enthusiast meets, club drives on a Sunday, best friends with the Indepedents who'll actually want and love to work on your car etc etc.. Go for either or even better get both. Both are infinitely more interesting and soulful that a diesel Skoda with a lot more character too!CHEAP doesn't mean ETHICAL0 -

An S-series at around that price isn't going to depreciate any further and will manage better mpg figures - which to my mind makes it more economical than some euro oilbox that would still lose £1000 a year in depreciation.
may be good for a car of tvr range
but in this day and age
30mpg isnt hardly economical amnd worth shouting about!0 -
depends what you mean by fast
a vts or 106gti is nippy and economical0 -
8.6 seconds is not lightning quick, but for the second hand market, for a car that does about 50mpg, and is well specced (and looks nice), its pretty good. There will always be quicker cars than diesels but the VRS matches up good performance with diesel economy. If you drive a few other diesels and then drive the VAG diesels you'll see the difference - its a nice engine for its class.
For 5k I'd go with an Elise although not sure on economy.matched betting: £879.63

Yeah a Clio 172 looks quite a good bet - might buy one of those myself and trade in my Fabia.matched betting: £879.63

If the Fabia was Re-mapped the power and torque increase by around 30%.
I had mine done by Revo for £500 and the difference was unbelievable.
0-60 7 secs (with lots of trouble getting the power down)
but the main difference was the torque and the overtaking power 30-70 6 secs (same as a Subaru impreza wrx). I had a couple of run-ins with a mondeo 220 and he couldn't keep up.0
